All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nj/njfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Robin M rlcww@comcast.net March 18, 2006, 4:21 pm Elizabeth Daily Journal, 8 Sep 1941 p.2 Boat Watchman Falls, Drowned John A Henry, 53, Victim of Mishap at Dock John Albert Henry, 53 years old, of 147 Second St, a watchman on the "Unity," a lighter moored in Staten Island Sound at the foot of Broadway, and a member of an old downtown family, was accidently drowned when he missed his footing and fell overboard while boarding the craft shortly after 1 a.m. today. The body, recovered by police with grappling hooks, was taken to the Haines Mortuary, where it was identified by Eugene F. Henry, of 193 Halsted Rd, a brother. The victim, according to Lieut. Hugh P Martin, had left the vessel last night to visit friends in the downtown section of the city. Returning to the craft shortly after 1 o'clock, he missed his footing while attempting to board it and fell overboard. John Geraghty, a watchman employed by the Kennedy Towing Line, also at the foot of Broadway, heard Henry's cries for help and notified police headquarters. Radio Patrolmen Gold and Henaler, assisted by Garaghty [sic], recovered the body after a 20 minute search with grappling hooks. It was found near the stern of the boat on which the victim had been employed. Dr Harold Lippman, an interne at St Elizabeth Hospital, who responded with the ambulance, pronounced Henry dead and the body was taken to the Haines Mortuary. Later, it was moved to the Funeral Home of Robert J Mitchell, 116 Livingston Street. Born in the downtown section, Mr Henry was the son of James and the late Abgail L Kidd Henry. He was educated at old No. 1 School and attended Grace Episcopal Church. Surviving besides his father and brother Eugene, are another brother, James Henry Jr of Elizabeth, and three sisters, Mrs Herman Hergert, Mrs Margaret Carkhuff, and Mrs Valentine Hausleiter, all of Linden. p.17 Henry--Suddenly in this city on Monday, September 8, 1941, John Albert Henry, son of James and the late Abgail L. Kidd Henry. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend funeral services at the Funeral Home of Robert J Mitchell, 116 Livingston Street, on Wednesday, September 10 at 2:30 pm.
