J., Oct 29 [1949]- Capt. Eliakim M. Van Pelt Sr. of 316 Fulton Street, former Elizabeth harbor master, long associated with the Van Pelt Towing Lines, died today at the Alexian Brothers Hospital after a brief illness. His age was 73. Four generations of the Van Pelt family have been connected with activities along the Elizabeth waterfront. In addition to operating the tugboat service, the family also engaged in marine surveying. Capt. Van Pelt held a marine captain's license for 55 years. He was a Mason and also was a member of the Marine Square Club, the Knights of Pythias, and the Odd Fellows. Surviving are two sons, Capt. John H. Van Pelt and Capt Eliakim M. Van Pelt Jr,; a daughter, Miss Lydia Van Pelt; a brother and two sisters.
