Maher The following list of about 80 male inhabitants of Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1743 was apparently the basis for a church related tax. The legend "Mr. Dickeson Rate" doubtless refers to Rev. Jonathan Dickinson, who was then pastor of the [First] Presbyterian Church. Based on the family names, the list is apparently limited to the parishioners of that church — the families of Westfield, Rahway and other surrounding communities, then still part of Elizabeth, are not present. Presumably, they were supporting the pastors of their own churches. The original list is at Rutgers University's Alexander Library in the Manuscript Collection of Special Collections and University Archives. Uncertain transcriptions are indicated by question marks and surrounded by brackets. A hyphen indicates an illegible number in the original. Parenthetical material was interlined in the original. The corners of the document are missing, but most of the information can be read. Finally, the assessors appear to have affixed their own signatures to the list.
