Mr Willever was born March 31,1901 in Phillipsburg,New Jersey,son of William and Anne S.[Piatt] Willever.His father,who was born at Phillipsburg in 1869,died January 8,1933,in that same community,where he was for years engaged in business as a merchant and grocer.He was a Republican in his political views,and fraternally was affiliated with the Free and Accepted Masons,the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Improved Order of Red Men.The mother was born in Phillipsburg in 1870 and died in January,1938. Public schools of Phillipsburg,his New Jersey birthplace,provided Clayton Willever's early formaleducation,and he graduated from high school there in 1919.He then became a student at Lafayette College,where he received the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1924.It was in that year that he practicalized his early interest in Repiblican politics by becoming a candidate for the office of surrogate of Warren County.Although still very young,he was elected to this post in November of that year for a five-year term.Afterward he was re-elected in 1929,1934 and 1939,and at that time of writing he plans again to be a 1944 candidate for the office of surrogate. Aside from his valuable service in this office,to which he was first elected when only twenty-three years of age,Mr.Willever has concerned himself with a wide range of activities in Warren County and this region of New Jersey.A trained lawer,he was graduated in 1936 from the John Marshall Law School with the degree of Bachelor of Laws.He is a member of the County Clerks' and Surrogates' Association of the State of New Jersey.Fraternally he is affiliated with the Free and Accepted Masons,his affiliation being with Lodge No.52,while he also belongs to the Phillipsburg Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks,Lodge No.1372,of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.In the Masonic order he has many connections,including memberships in the Tall Cedars of Lebanon and other bodies.He is a member too,of the Sigma Nu fraternity,which he joined in his student days.He belongs to the Phillipsburg Fish and Game Club and the Warren County Fish and Game Club,he is interested in fishing,hunting and other sports.He aids the local fire fighting organization in Phillipsburgh as a member of the Alert Fire Company.He holds membership in St.Johns Lutherian Church and its Mens Club. In Phillipsburgh,New Jersey,June 26,1925,Clayton Willever married Margaret Irmer,a native of Phillipsburgh,daughter of August and Katherine Irmer,both of whom were born in Germany.They became the parents of three children,all born in Phillipsburgh:1.Clayton Irmer,b-Jan 28,1927.2.Edward Leigh b-May 30,1930.3.Suzanne,b Jan 26,1935
