Monday January 29,1900 Two Sunday Stabbing Affrays Krisse vs. Vogel James VOGEL and Richard KRISSE, both residing at 69 Borden Avenue, became involved in a quarrel at the breakfast table Sunday morning. During the altercation VOGEL was stabbed in the right side and back, and after being attended by Dr CASSIDY was sent to St. John’s Hospital in an ambulance. There is no change in the condition of James VOGEL, who is in St.John’s Hospital. The knife blade penetrated VOGEL’S lung and he suffers from internal hemorrhages that add to the danger of his condition. VOGEL is forty-three years old and employed as a locomotive fireman on the Long Island Railroad. He boarded with KRISSE’S mother. Coroner RUOFF has taken his ante-mortem statement. He said that while in the dining room KRISSE threw a cup at him and then rushed upon him with a knife and plunged it into his side and arm. KRISSE gives a different version of the trouble that proceeded the stabbing. He says he entered the dining room and found VOGEL cursing his mother and remonstrated with the boarder. That VOGEL there upon hurled a cup of coffee at him and he drew his penknife to frighten VOGEL who is big and powerful. KRISSE claims that the boarder rushed upon him and that he had to defend himself and used the knife. He asserts very positively that he did not commit an unprovoked assault upon VOGEL that only acted in self-defense. The hospital physician pronounced VOGEL’S condition to be very serious, and entertain little hope for his recovery. KRISSE has been committed to jail without bail pending examination. He is twenty years old and a jockey by occupation and physically no match for VOGEL. The Daily Star Long Island City N.Y Monday January31, 1900 VOGEL DIED THIS MORNING Fatal Ending of the Stabbing Affray in the Borden Avenue Boarding House. One of the two stabbing affrays in this city has resulted in the death of one victim. James VOGEL of 69 Borden Avenue, died in St.John’s Hospital at 3 o’clock this Wednesday morning after lingering between life and death since Sunday afternoon. VOGEL was stabbed in the right side by Richard KRISSE, of the same address. The knife blade penetrated the lung and from the first the hospital physician had little hope for his recovery. VOGEL boarded with Mrs. KRISSE mother of the man who stabbed him. He was forty three years old and employed on the Long Island Railroad as a locomotive fireman. He was a big man and very powerful. Richard KRISSE is only about twenty years old and of slim build. He is a racing jockey by occupation and has claimed from the time of his arrest that he only stabbed VOGEL in self-defence. KRISSE was arrested by Policeman Herbert GRAHAM and he declared to the policeman that he used the knife in fear of his own life. Both men told different stories about the trouble that led to the stabbing. Coroner RUOFF took VOGEL’S ante mortem statement a few hours after he was stabbed. That will not be made public until KRISSE is arraigned before the Magistrate. The wounded man, however, stated to others that he was sitting at the breakfast table in Mrs.KRISSE’S dining room when the son entered and after some side remarks threw a coffee cup at him. He started after the youth to chastise him and then KRISSE drew the knife and plunged it into his side and right arm. The story told after his arrest by KRISSE was directly opposite to that of VOGEL. He claimed that VOGEL was the aggressor. He said that VOGEL was at the table when he entered the dining room, and that his six-year-old sister was also seated at the table and his mother was in the dining room. He stated that when he entered the apartment VOGEL was cursing his mother and that he resented it by words, and that VOGEL threw the cup at him and that being the smaller of the two he drew his pocketknife to frighten VOGEL, and that when the latter caught him the stabbing was the result of the struggle between them. There is no question but KRISSE was physically no match for his victim, and as the only witnesses to the fight were his mother and young sister the police must wait for their testimony. The victim of the stabbing is said to have a wife and several children living in Hackettstown. NJ.He has resided in this city for a number of years. His death was due to internal hemorrhages. Richard KRISSE, who stabbed James VOGEL, was arraigned before Magistrate CONSORTON this Wednesday afternoon on a charge of homicide. The examination was set down for Friday and he was held without bail. NOTE: James was the husband of Rebecca Woolever of Hackettstown Warren Co N.J.
