All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nj/njfiles.htm ************************************************ William Silverthorn, Senator The New York Times November 7, 1893, Wednesday William Silverthorn,well known throughout New Jersey ,died at his residence in Belvidere yesterday.He was seventy one years old.He had been County Treasurer,a member of the Assembly,and State Senator.In 1880 he was a prominent candidate for Congress.He was also a prominent Mason. Belvidere Apollo Silverthorn, William November 10, 1893 3 2 Though the end came suddenly,the death of Ex-Senator William Silverthorn,at his home in Belvidere,on Monday was not entirly unexpected.He had been in falling health for serveral years,his decline begginning with a paralyic stroke from which he only partially recovered.Until this he had been a man of most robust and active life.In business and political life,he was accustomed to work day and night.He was born in Knowlton township,on the old Brands homestead,near Delaware.His mother was a sister of the late David Brands,of Knowlton.When quite a young man he came to Belvidere and engaged in butchering business,which he conducted for many years,during which time he also was interested in droving.He continued to deal in cattle and sheep until failing health compelled him to retire from business. He was always greatly interested in politics and took an active part in the political affairs of the county and State.He held many lower offices.He was for a time Freeholder and filled the office of County Collector.He represented this distric in the Legislature for three years,and in 1875 was elected to the State Senate and served for a term of three years.In 1880 Mr. Silverthorn was a candiate for Congress and was defeated by Jenry S.Harris. He was for many years one of the prominent Democratic leaders of the county, and retained the confidence of his followers to the last.He was close friends of Ex-Congressman Pidcock,of Hunderton.Mr.Silverthorn was an enterprising citizen,a kind and generous neighbor,a firm friend,an affectionate husband and father. One brother,David Silverthorn,of Knowlton,a wife,one son,Peter Silverthorn, two daughters,Mrs.George Beatty and Mrs.Dr.Baird,of New York,survive him.
