Willever Killed in Action in France October 25, 1918 The funeral of Samuel A. Willever will be held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Willever, No. 1 Davis street, and services will be conducted in Grace Lutheran Church at 3 o'clock. Members of Bernard J. Donovan Post, No. 203, American Legion, will be in attendance and serve as the pallbearers. The body arrived last evening. Samuel A. Willever, a popular young resident of Phillipsburg, was killed in action somewhere in France, October 25, 1918, this information being received by his parents the evening of November 29th of that year. The telegram signed Harris, Adjutant General, stated that it was with deepest regret that it was his duty to inform them that Samuel A. Willever, Private, Infantry, had been officially reported as being killled in action on the above date. Besides his grief-stricken parents there survive one sister, Miss Maude Willever, and two brothers, William Willever Jr. and Clayton Willever. The young soldier was a graduate of Phillipsburg High School, Class of 1912. For a time he was employed as a clerk by the Phillipsburg Trust Company, but when it became certain that he would be called to service he resigned his position, and for a time worked for his father at the latter's grocery store. Deceased was an athlete of no mean ability. While attending high school he was a member of the baseball team, and later as a member of the German Hill team of the City League, he made a fine reputation as a baseball player. On one occasion, while playing with the high school team, he hit a home run, with the bases full, and the game was won for his team. Willever left Phillipsburg on April 4, 1918, with a number of other young men, for Camp Dix. After undergoing a course of training that was comparatively brief, he was ordered to proceed overseas, and sailed for France May 18th. It was but a short time after he arrived overseas that letters were received by his relatives and friends, and on each occasion he stated that he was well pleased with the service, and he was at all times optimistic of the success of the cause for which he was fighting. The young hero, who was 22 years old on July Fourth, 1918, was a member of Company K, 312th Infantry. Deceased was a member of Phillipsburg Fire Company, No. 1; Grace Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg Lodge, No. 395, B.P.O. Elks; Montana Lodge, No. 23, Knights of Pythias, and the College Hill Club. In front of the Warren County Court House there is a small memorial area that contains tablets with the list of dead from the wars of the 20th century.
