Pop 1,200. Colfax county. It is located on the St L R M & P and C & N W Rys 47 miles s w of Raton the county seat. Cimarron is known as the key to the "Kingdom of Colfax;" the title is said to be peculiarly fitting for the prosperous little city in the eastern foothills of the Sangre de Christo range in truth holds the great wealth of mountain hill and valley of forest mine and stream in a territory 35 miles s e to w by 50 miles n to s and the key to the western slopes of the Rockies to Cimarron Canyon and Taos pass the lowest pass in the great range for trans-continental railways. It has an ample supply of pure water reservoirs high up in the mountain pockets piped down. The natural advantages and resources all tend to make this the coming city of the county of Colfax and give it much prestige as an agricultural and mining center. There are great coal fields in the Ponil valley nearby and millions of feet of uncut pine. Vast herds of cattle and sheep graze on the adjacent ranges. The region all about is one of the finest in the world for apple orchards. The best watered valleys in the west are here making this locality one of the richest garden spots to be found anywhere. Irrigation is making this a very attractive and prosperous country. These irrigated lands are yielding prodigious crops and the system of irrigation is being extended and- enlarged every year through a systematic distribution of the inexhaustible water supply. The lumber, mines and orchards are already producing large fortunes. There are no insects here and apple orchards are very healthy and frost damage is very rare. The largest orchard in this region has met with but one crop failure in thirty-five years. There is enough choice orchard land now under irrigation to grow 1,500,000 apples. There is an excellent water system. A franchise for an electric light and power plant is now pending and a well-equipped plant will doubtless be erected at once. There are several churches, fine schools, a good bank, 5 hotels and the Bell telephone service. A weekly newspaper the News and Citizen is published. Exp W F & Co. Tel W U. Geo Chandler P M.
