L. Polk (1912) O. L. OWEN. Hon. O. L. Owen, Democratic State Corporation Commissioner of New Mexico, was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, October 1st, 1876, moved to Kansas with his parents in 1879. There he grew to manhood on a farm, receiving his education in the public schools, and at the Central Normal College, at Great Bend, Kansas. Taught school in the years 1896 and 1897 in Lane County, Kansas. Was bookkeeper for the Swift & Holliday Drug Company at Topeka, Kansas, in 1898. Began railroad work with the Santa Fe Ry. in 1899 on the construction of the Bartlesville branch, and continued in that service in the capacity of office engineer until 1908. He is thoroughly familiar with the accounting, construction and operating departments of railroad work. In 1908 he resigned his position with the Santa Fe company and engaged in the real estate business at Clovis, N. M., later engaged in the wholesale fruit and produce business at the same place under the name of The New Mexico Produce & Grocer Co. He has been actively engaged in the organization of the Clovis Lumber Co., Clovis Journal Publishing Co., First National Banks at Melrose, N. M. and Clovis, N. M. He was elected to the office of City Treasurer of the city of Clovis and served in that office in the years 1909 and 1910 during a period of municipal improvement expending $150,000. Has been largely interested in the upbuilding of Clovis and eastern New Mexico during his seven years of residence in the Territory. Is a 32d degree Mason, Elk and Modern Woodman of America.
