Population 5,100. Dona Ana county of which it is the seat. Beautifully situated on the A T & S F Ry and in the heart of the celebrated Mesilla Valley 40 miles northwest of El Paso Tex. The New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts is 2 1/2 miles south of the city. The United States land office and the Third Judicial District Court of the United States are located here. Since the commencement of work on the Elephant Butte dam for which the U S government is spending a sum of $10,000,000 the population has increased rapidly and new industries have been started indicating full confidence in the future of the town by those who are looking for safe and sound investments. The Mesilla Valley is noted the world over for the fine quality of its fruits and farm products the exceeding mildness of its summer and winter climate and the natural beauty of the valley and surrounding mountains which contain many undeveloped mineral resources. In Las Cruces there is an efficient fire department, modern water and sewer systems, an electric light and ice plants and two private and three public schools, affording splendid educational opportunities. Episcopal, Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational and Baptist churches are sustained. It contains three banks, seven hotels, two theatres, a bottling works, produce exchange and numerous up-to-date business houses. The press is represented by The Democrat (tri-weekly) The Republican (semi-weekly) a weekly paper The Citizen and three weeklies in Spanish El Eco del Valle El Labrador and La Estrella.
