Submitted By: Richard Wilkinson jrrrr@zianet.com ************************************************************ CUBA, EDDY COUNTY, NEW MEXICO CEMETERY RECORDS Records extracted by The Mexican Cemetery Association Typing by Richard Wilkinson Dec 1999 Submittal by Richard Wilkinson Dec 1999 The Cuba Cemetery is now an Official Eddy County Historic Site. It is located on West London Road about 2 1/2 miles off Highway 285. This intersection is about 11 miles Southeast of Carlsbad, Eddy County, NM. When leaving the City Limits of Carlsbad, the intersection is the last one on the right just before entering the Village of Loving, NM. The site is a remote desert area. Prior to the year 1910, the land in this area was controlled by the United States Government. In 1910, the government began giving land grants to anyone that wanted to settle the area. Many people from the southwest Texas community of Shafter, TX, which is located south of Marfa, TX, came to South Eddy County and settled the community of Cuba. Cuba no longer exist, leaving only only a ghostly reminder at their cemetery. In 1918, a worldwide influenza outbreak began taking its toll on the community nearly wiping out the population of Cuba. It is estimated that about 500 people were buried in the Cuba Cemetery. Today only about 40 of these people are known. Over the years, control of the land that this cemetery sits on passed from one owner to another. As the years passed, the last land owner fadded into history and the Mexican Cemetery Association took an interest in the site. They approached the Eddy County Commissioners and entered into an agreement with the County in which the County would take control of the site. They deeded the land to the County and the site was cleaned up and fenced off and a watering system was installed and grass planted. A small monument was erected and the members of the Association were appointed trustees of the site. Today, the Mexican Cemetery Association is still working on identifying the many people believed buried there. If you require additional information on this site or anyone known to be buried there, please contact: Natividad and Luz Onsurez, 412 N. Olive St., Carlsbad, NM 88220 their phone number is (505)885-3048. Mr. And Mrs. Onsurez would also like to hear from anyone that may have any information on anyone buried at the Cuba Cemetery.
