          ARTESIA,NM HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

The earliest funeral home records for Artesia, NM are 1910.
Prior to 1906 caskets/coffins could be purchased at Ullery's
Furniture Store and Mortuary.

1906-1940 McClay's Funeral Home
1940-1954 Paulin's Funeral Home
1954-present Terpening & Son Funeral Home

The early records are incomplete.  Dates of birth were not
given, however the age of the person is often listed.

Towns or places of death and the cemeteries listed can usually
be found within twenty miles from Artesia, NM
NEW MEXICO PLACE NAMES will give locations of these small
communities if needed.
        Example:
        Hope, NM - 20 miles east of Artesia, includes two
                   cemeteries, upper and lower.
        Cottonwood, NM - 3 miles north of Artesia
        Lake Arthur, NM - 8 miles north of Artesia
        Hagerman, NM - just north of Lake Arthur

The following abbreviations will help in reading these early
records.

S (Single), W (White), M (Male), F (Female), WM (White Male),
SF (Single Female), WF (White Female)

The mexican names were often misspelled.  Gomaz should probably
be Gomez.  The people with mexican surnames may be listed as
being buried at Woodbine or the Artesia Cemetery.  They are
actually in a section east of Woodbine called San Marcos
Cemetery.  Black persons were buried in a section in the north
east corner of Woodbine called Woodlawn Cemetery.

Until 1955, Artesia had the one large cemetery.  Restlawn Memorial
Park, located north of Artesia, was opened in 1955.  In 1986, the
name of this Cemetery was changed to Twin Oaks.

Some of the people were buried on private land and we will never
be able to locate all of these graves.

The Artesia Historical and Genealogical Society wishes to thank
Terpening & Son Funeral Home for allowing the early records to be
extracted.  Kay Peterson, President of the Society, extracted
the records.  Fern Wilson, Vice President of the Society, and
Kay Peterson, did the first typing of the records.
