Pop 2,000 (with outside suburbs). Eddy county. Incorporated in 1893. The county seat on the A T & S F Ry 75 miles s of Roswell and 35 n of the state line. Has Baptist, Catholic, Christian, Episcopal, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, an $18,000 high school, a $12,000 grammar school, a $40,000 court house and jail, one of the best sewer systems in the state, a first-class volunteer fire department, a fine water system, electricity for lights and power derived from a dam on the Pecos river, 20 miles of shaded streets, 10 miles of concrete walks, 3 hospitals and sanitariums, 2 banks, 4 hotels, a modern opera house seating 700, a telephone system, a commercial club, an ice plant, a planing mill and lodges of Odd Fellows, Masons, K of P, Red Men and W of W. Thirty thousand acres of. irrigated land is tributary and about 75 miles of stock country to the e s and w. Two weekly newspapers the Current and the Argus are published. A semi-weekly star auto route 110 miles e to the plains towns, also one w to the mountain towns are maintained. Daily rural mail routes to farms and irrigated lands.
