Jurva. Jurva, 83, died January 3 at Columbia Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, Calif. after a short illness. Betty Young Jurva was born November 11, 1916, in Phenix, Ariz., to Myra Hooper and Henry Herbert Hotchkiss. She was raised in the Valley of the Sun and graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1934. In 1938, she earned her bachelor of arts degree from Arizona State University. Shortly thereafter she moved to Morenci, Ariz. to teach elementary school. There she met and married Urho "Jerry" A. Jurva. The moved to eastern Oregon. WWII drew the couple to Southern California where he found work in the defense industry. In 1997, they moved to Lakeview Christian Home in Carlsbad. She was preceded in death by an older sister, Myra Hotchkiss, and her husband, Jerry, in May 1998. Survivors include a daughter, Anne M. Agah of San Jose, Calif.; son, Charles H. Jurva of Carlsbad; and four grandchildren. (Photo shown of Jarva)
