Merritt, 86, with burial following at Carlsbad Cemetery with honors by the Carlsbad Veterans' Honor Guard. Merritt died January 8 at Landsun Health Service Center. Denton- Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born January 27, 1913, in Fairbanks, Alaska, to Howard M. Merritt and Mary Lettie Mero Merritt. He grew up in San Diego, California. He graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute and the University of Arizona. While serving in the Army, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant colonel. Prior to moving to Landsun Center in 1994, he had resided in Midland, Texas, for 39 years. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 42 years, Ellen M. Merritt, in 1998, and his brother, Robert M. Merritt. He is survived by a son, Laurance H. Merritt of Ojai, Calif.; a daughter, Mary B. Merritt of Orlando, Florida; three loving stepdaughters, Karen E. Johnson of Carlsbad, Elodie E. Brown of Midland, Texas, and Mary M. MacConnel of San Diego, Calif; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and his friends and caregivers Richard and Minnie Parraz of Carlsbad. (Photo shown of Merritt)
