In 1998, she was honored at Clarendon College and designated queen of the celebration being the oldest living graduate. She taught school at Quail, Hedley and Claude, Texas. In 1942, she moved to Roswell, NM. In 1978, she moved back to Vernon. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Eastern Star, Business and Professional Women, and a 25 year member of DAR. He lived in Carlsbad until eight years ago when he moved to Hobbs, NM, and then to Denver City, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Glodie Joyce Hamblen in 1983. Hamilton, 79, of Carlsbad. Cremation has taken place. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born June 30, 1921, in Chicago to Gordon Kennedy and Frances Jane McDermott Hamilton. He grew up in Chicago. He joined the Army in 1939, at age 18. He was sent to the Pacific where he was stationed and engaged in many of the Japanese offensives. He was sent back to the states due to war fatigue. He was placed back into duty with General Patton's 3rd Army, where he was involved in the retaking of Europe. He was a highly decorated soldier, receiving multiple Silver Stars and Bronze Stars. He was discharged after the war. He re-enlisted five years later where he saw action during the Korean Conflict and later served in the Vietnam War as a Green Beret. He was assigned as an instructor in jungle survival training and subsequently taught at the 82nd Airborne Jump School. In 1971, he was discharged after 34 years of military service. In 1972, he and his wife moved to Carlsbad where he taught ROTC. He was inducted into the Infantry Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, GA. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Hamilton. Survivors include his wife, Mary Hamilton of Carlsbad; brother, George Hamilton of Carlsbad; and sister, Mary Adele Hartell of Campbell, CA. She was born January 19, 1905, in Eastland County, about five miles northwest of Ranger, TX, the third child born to Tressie Work Brittain and Thomas J. Brittain. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Midgie Brittain Bates and James Bates of Shelton, WA; two sisters-in-law, Estelle Brittain and Veta Britain of Odessa, TX; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Hardaway and wife, Beverly, of Carlsbad. She married James Houston Hardaway in the First Baptist Church in Ranger, TX, on December 11, 1920. She was preceded in death by her husband on January 5, 1982, and by three of their sons, James Leroy Hardaway, Jack Williams Hardaway, and Billy Darrell Hardaway. To the first marriage of James Houston Hardaway, he and his first wife, Myrtle Williams were born two sons, James Leroy Hardaway and Jack Williams Hardaway, and one daughter, Lois Hardaway Shearman of Lovington. To the marriage of James Houston and Maymie Brittain, were born Billy Darrell Hardaway, Bobby Gene Hardaway; twins, Donny J. Hardaway and Donella Hardaway Rodgers; and twins, Thomas Dale Hardaway and Judith Hardaway Devenport. James and Maymie resided in Stephens, Hartley, and Haskell Counties, Texas, in the 1920's prior to moving to Monahans, TX, in the 1930's; Pecos County, TX, in the early 40's, and then to the Knowles Community of Lea Co., NM, in 1951 and later into Lovington until 1993 when Mrs. Hardaway came to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Judith and James Devenport in Midland, TX. She was born October 3, 1914, in Passaic, NJ, the only child of Elsy Mueller and Jean Jacques Weber. She was educated at the Beau-Soleil Academy in Lausanne, Switzerland. She married Stephen Walsh Holderness, United States Military Academy 1936, in 1936. For 30 years, she traveled the world as an Officer's Wife, including Naples, Italy; Athens, Greece; and Camp Zama, Japan. After retirement the couple built a home at Hilton Head Island, SC. Stephen passed away in May 1992, and Elsie lived in SC until April 1998, when she moved to Carlsbad to be near family. She is survived by two sons, Stephen W. Holderness, Jr. (USMA 1962) and his wife, Liz, of Cherry Hill, NJ, and Jerome Holderness (USMA 1968) and his wife, Susan, of Carlsbad; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
