He was inducted into the Army on February 8, 1941, and was shipped to Algeria, where he was involved in the Sicily, Naples-Foggia and Rom-Arno battles. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge and Meritorious Unit Insignia. He was honorably discharged on September 20, 1945, and returned to Carlsbad. He married Katheryn Rosser in 1951, in Carlsbad. He was active with the Elks Club, VFW and First Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife on November 9, 1985; a brother, James Allen Vervalin; and a sister, Bonnie V. He served in the Army Infantry from 1960 to 1962 in Germany. He moved to Coos Bay in 1963. She married Evan Jones Yearout. They moved to California for a year and then to Maryville, in east Tennessee, for two years, where their first child was born. They moved to Floyd County, Texas, and farmed. After selling the farm they moved to Carlsbad in 1943. She had been a member of First United Methodist Church since 1946. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, three sisters, and her husband on November 1, 1965.
