He was baptized 1-30-1927 at Puerto de Luna his padrinos were Enrique Baros and Adela Lueras His parents were married April 1, 1926 at Santa Rosa. Sanitago's paternal grandparents were Francisco Elfigo Campos and Guadalupe Hinojos. His maternal grandparents were Hipolito Torres and Apolonia Vigil. Santiago's Elementry and High School educations were in Santa Rosa. He served as a US Navy Seaman 1944-1946. After leaving the Navy, he attended and graduated from Central Colllge in Fayette Missouri. He then attended the University of New Mexico School of Law and and received his JD in 1953, finishing first in his class. He was appointed the First assistant attorney general of New Mexico 1955-1957 From 1957 to 1970 he was in private practice in Santa Fe New Mexico. In 1971 he was appointed District Judge for the First District of New Mexico in Santa Fe On June 2, 1978 he ws nominated by President Carter as Federal Judge, District of New Mexico. He was confirmed by the US Senate July 10, 1978 in Washington, DC. He received Federal Judicial Commission July 12, 1978, becoming the first Hispanic to serve as a Federal Judge, in the District of New Mexico. He served as Chief Federal Judge 1987-1989 in Santa Fe New Mexico He assumed senior judicial status on Dec 26, 1992, in Santa Fe New Mexico. In 1993 he recieved the Distinguished Achievement Award from the University of New Mexico School of Law. That same year he received the same Distinguished Achievement Award from the University of New Mexico. Judge Santiago Campos died January 20, 2001 in Santa Fe after a long battle with cancer. He was buried at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. On September 15, 2007 the Federal Courthouse at 100 South Federal Place, Santa Fe New Mexico was named the "Santiago Eloy Campos Federal Courthouse." The ancestors of Judge Campos hailed from Antonchico, Las Colonias, Pastura, Santa Fe and Tome before settling in Puerto De Luna and Santa Rosa. He was a member of the original Campos Redondo settlers in New Mexico. Miguela of course named after the mother and maternal grandmother of Judge Campos.
