San Ignacio, NM is about 18 miles to the west of Santa Rosa, South of U.S. 66 (I 40). Mr. Apodaca allowed us to go through his property, explaining that all of the gates are locked. He drove ahead in his pick up to show us the way. After a long winding road of about 6 miles, he left us at the north side of the arroyo. We had to hike the rest of the way. We traveled along the side of the arroyo looking for easier passage down into ant out the other side of the arroyo. Torrential rains have turned the arroyo into a canyon. The San Ignacio church is now in ruins but the walls are still standing. The roof has fallen in and the bell tower houses two very large nests. The altar is still in place. There are very many stones from around the area used as markers. The dressed stones that did have names were copied except for the ones that erosion left impossible to read. They are all in disorder. This cemetery was copied on April 9, 1994 by Amelia Aragon with the help of Monica Bermea and typed by Ann Marie Aragon. I would like to thank Mrs. E. C. Shaeffer and her son for the map and directions to the location of the cemetery, and my husband, Albino, and son-in-law, Richard Bermea, for taking us there. By: Amelia Aragon. Copyright © 1994.
