Luna county. Located in the s w portion of the state in the lower Mimbres Valley on the main line of the E P & S W R R 74 miles w of El Paso Texas and 112 e of Douglas Ariz. Up to about four years ago the Mimbres Valley was populated chiefly by cattlemen and great herds of cattle grazed throughout the entire valley. Since that time the immense supply of shallow water lying beneath the earth's surface has been discovered and the country is now being populated mostly by farmers while the cattlemen have been compelled to go elsewhere in quest of range for their cattle. Pumping for irrigation is the chief mode of agriculture and numerous wells have already been developed which yield from 100 to 2,000 gallons of water per minute with a very shallow lift and at a high percentage of profit. Surrounding this valley are the Florida and Tres Hermanas mountains which are rich in silver, lead zinc copper marble and onyx, from which several thousands of dollars worth of ore have already been taken. Columbus is two years old. Has a fine Methodist church building. Baptist Mission, toed schools, U S Custom house, a tank, first class hotels and restaurants, city water works, up-to-date stores of every line of trade, an automobile line and several fraternal societies.
