Mrs. Clarkson, former teacher, dies in Oklahoma

Mrs. Carrie Clarkson, longtime resident of Deming and former teacher in Deming
High School, died Monday, Sept 18, in Ardmore, Okla. 

She originally came to Deming in 1902 from Arkansas, where she was born, with
her mother, Cora Steed, and three younger brothers. her father, Dr. P. M. Steed,
had come here two years before for his health.

After graduating from DHS in 1912, she attended Oberlin College in Ohio for two
years planning to teach music. She was married in 1914 and had one son. After
her husband’s death in 1918 during the flu epidemic, she returned to New Mexico
and got her degree at new Mexico Teachers College in Silver City. She taught
school for several years in West Plains, Mo. until she remarried. her husband,
J. D. Clarkson, died in the early 1940s.

Mrs. Clarkson came back to Deming to help her mother take care of her father.
After his death, she started teaching commercial studies in DHS in the fall of
1943. She retired in 1958.

Last summer she went to stay temporarily with her brother, John, in Ardmore.
June 3, the day before she left, she had lunch with her close friend, Marie
Matson, and told her she expected to return the first of October.

She died in the hospital in Ardmore Sept. 18, on her birthday.

Mrs. Clarkson leaves one grandson, Alex Rosser of Kansas City, Mo., and three
brothers; John; Dr. Frank Steed, San Antonio; and Horace, Phoenix, Arz.
