Ten days ago, accompanied by his wife he left for thee southwest in hope that his health might be improved. The trip was made without difficulty, but when they reached Albuquerque, both were pretty well tired out. Their destination was Deming and according to the dispatch received last night Mr. Gundlach was there taken with a chill Tuesday night and died within a few hours. Last October Mr. Gundlach was stricken with influenza and for days it was not known whether he would live or die. Lobar pneumonia developed but when he had recovered after a severe struggle his lungs began to trouble him. Following the advice of his physician decided to try the mild and equitable climate of the southwest. The trip was made cheerfully and with hope in the future for an ultimate recovery. Mr. Gundlach was a son of Mr. Mrs. Augustus Gundlach, 290 W. 5th Street. He was born in Ithaca 34 years ago but had spent practically all of his life in this city and Oswego Town. Up to the time of his illness with the flu last October, he was employed as a clerk in the storehouse at the New York Central Railroad shops. Besides his widow, Miss Pauline Carpenter of this city, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Gundlach, he is survived by two small children and a sister, Mrs. Hazel Sanger of Camillus. The body is expected to arrive here next Monday night. The announcement of Mr. Gundlach's death came as a shock to a very large number of friends who could not bring themselves to believe he was seriously ill. Additional Comments: Newspaper states the body was going back to Oswego, New York however diligent research has not turned up any cemetery or burial record, so am inclined to think his body did not leave New Mexico. Eugene came down with the flu in 1918. He managed to recover, but became ill one year later. Doctor advised the equitable climate of New Mexico as a potential cure. Upon arrival in Albuquerque with his wife, he caught the "chills". His destination was Deming, NM, which is where he died shortly after arriving. The date of the newspaper was the 13th, stating Eugene died the day before (presumably on the 12th). Your death record collection says the 11th. (The jpg image comes from fultonhistory.com, which is a database of scanned newspaper articles from the New York area. Eugene lived in New York so the local papers picked up the obituary). Not sure how badly Deming, NM was hit by the flu in 1919, or if Eugene was buried there in Deming. It seems unlikely at the timeframe that Eugene would have been shipped back to New York for burial given the lack of burial space, caskets, refrigeration, etc. Perhaps someone knows where people who died in this timeframe were buried in Deming?
