  GALLUP. Pop 3,000. McKinley county. The county seat and a thriving and rapidly
growing town in the n w part of the state on the A T & S F Ry 158 miles n w of
Albuquerque. It is the center of a large agricultural mining and grazing
district and is the distributing center of supplies for the Indian reservations
of the Navajos and Zunis in New Mexico and the Hopis in Arizona and also for the
numerous trading posts located on the reserves. It is adjacent to the great
mining district of the American Steam Block Coal the best soft coal mined in the
United States for domestic purposes and general use, 50,000 tons of coal are
mined and shipped daily, 6 new shafts are now being sunk and the output of coal
will be increased to 100,0u0 tons per day in 1913. Hundreds of carloads of wool
sheep and cattle are shipped annually. Thousands of tourists stop here annually
and visit the many historical scenes near the city. Gallup has Catholic,
Episcopal, Congregational and Methodist churches, 2 banks and a hotel. A daily
newspaper the Republican and two weeklies the Republican and the Independent are
