Submitted by: Margaret Martinez margmartinez@carolina.rr.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eiland Cemetary East of Portales, NM Eiland, New Mexico was a township located on what is now a triangle of land formed by two dirt roads intersecting each other and each intersecting the curve in the existing paved highway. Just east of Eiland was the cemetary (see directions below). Its school had about 15 students of all ages, grades 1 through 8. Graduating grade 8 was a completed education. Two of the teachers were Miss Sanders and Mr. Ingram during 1910s. This school closed about 1925-30 when a post office/store/gas station and a new brick schoolhouse were built at Arch, NM located about 6 miles east on that same highway. Later all school students were bussed into Portales, NM. Directions to Eiland Cemetary: Go to Portales Cemetary at East 3rd Street & South Kilgore Street, Portales, NM. From there, travel east on the Arch highway (highway NM88) for 11 miles. At NM88 & RR J, there is a sign pointing to the Eiland Cemetary. Turn left and drive approximately 1/8th mile on the dirt road. The cemetary is fenced in on the left. Notes side by side: Jeanetta Venetta (?)
