Pop 700. San Juan county. The county seat on the D & R G R R 35 miles s of Durango Colo. It is in the center of the famous San Juan fruit section having 1,000 acres of bearing orchard and 5,000 acres of young orchard not yet in bearing. It is also in the center of the largest area of irrigated land in the county the Citizens Ditch now being completed with an acreage of 7,000 the Inca Canal partly constructed with an acreage of 25,000 and the Hammond Canal partly constructed with an acreage of 12,000 all of the above being tributary to Aztec. All kinds of farm produce as well as fruits are raised. Aztec is a live up-to-date business town never had a boom has not grown faster than the surounding country is on a firm business basis and will double in population as the lands under the new ditches are settled up. Has no large bonded indebtedness and thus has low taxes. Nearly all the business buildings are of brick construction and permanent. Aztec has the brightest future of all the San Juan towns. Has Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, 2 large school houses, a sanitarium that would do justice to a city of 5,000 population, a bank, a brick hotel, a library, an electric light plant, a flour mill and a commercial club.
