Submitted by: Kay Townsend kayt@trail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Las Vegas, New Mexico Cemeteries: Volume I Masonic, Odd Fellows, Montefiore copied by Jean Whiting 1978-1989 (no copyright) What is known in Las Vegas as the Masonic Cemetery is really three cemeteries---the Masonic Cemetery, the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, and the Montefiore Cemetery. There are 2,350 names in the index of the stones in these three cemeteries. Many families have members buried in two of the cemeteries, some even have burials in all three cemeteries. Tombstones in these there [sic] cemeteries were copied in 1978 and checked and updated in 1982 and during the winter of 1988-89 . Several of those copied in 1978 are no longer legible. Rows are numbered from east to west. Graves in two of the sections are in two cemeteries. Entrance to the Masonic Cemetery is through a gate at the end of Mills Ave. Entrance to the Odd Fellows Cemetery is through a gate on Mora St. Montefiore Cemetery can be reached through either of the other two cemeteries. A note in the Odd Fellows Cemetery record book states that IOOF Lodge #4 was instituted Oct. 26, 1879. Charter members of the IOOF Lodge #4 were J. Abramosky, J. Cochran, J.C. Adlon, F. H. Atkins, J.E. Arthur, F.E. Bell, L. Bauer, J. Black, J.E. Burnett, J.C. Bromagen, J.C. Caven, H. Cohn, J.L. Chapman, J. Cochran, J.M. Downing, C. Fisk, G.H. Fisher, Geo. Fuller, J.P. Faarmer, W.W. Givens, L. Gulden, W.T. Guthrie, H. Giest, P.W. Hulzman, C.V. Hedgecock, J.W. Hopkinson, J. Hubert, E. Hunker, P.C. Hogsett, W. Hesseldon, W.R. Herman, H. Hanes, J.W. Haagland, J. Hearsey, O. Huntsinger, H.C. Janes, W.R. Kistler, M.E. Kessler, Wm. Knobb, U. Loomis, W.R. Landram, W.J. Mendenhal, F. Matlock, J.B. Mackel, R.B. Martin, J.F. Michel, R.B. Martin, J.A. Mosby, J. McLaughlin, G.A. Miers, D.A. McKeechen, J. Masken, J.S. Nelson, S. Nahm, F.C. Ogden, E. McGafferty, F. Papa, T. Patten, S. Petty, L.C. Pindy, T. Ruterbeck, J. Rieddinger, G.A. Rothgeb, F. Ribie, P. Roth, and A.T. Rogers. Soon after IOOF Lodge #4 was instituted, the cemetery was bought, fenced, and divided into 510 lots according to the note in the Odd Fellows Cemetery book. The earliest burial recorded in the book is 1880, but there is a tombstone in the cemetery bearing a death date of 1868. Either the IOOF bought an existing cemetery or an 1868 burial was moved to the new cemetery. The March 7, 1888, Las Vegas Daily Optic reported that a deed from the Odd Fellows to N.L. Rosenthal, as trustee of the Montefiore Congregation, for the burying ground had been recorded. The Odd Fellows Cemetery record book lists several blocks as "sold to Montefiore Church". This is usually referred to as the Jewish Cemetery. In 1886, John H. Adam was in charge of both the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemeteries. In November of 1900, the Optic reported that James Young had been awarded the contract for "the building of the 1,400 feet of fence around the Masonic Cemetery. The fence will enclose the block east of the present Masonic enclosure and the Odd Fellows Cemetery and will join the latter burial ground at the southeast corner . It will be four or five times the size of the present ground and will be surveyed and laid off in lots and avenues. The fence will be built of white sandstone with large capstones of the same material. It is to be hoped that in time the I.O.O.F. and Jewish cemeteries will be similarly enclosed". The Odd Fellows Cemetery was enclosed by a matching sandstone fence all along Mora St. and around the cemetery to the west and north. Although many stones of this fence have fallen, it is still recognizeable. In September of 1912, the Optic reported that the contract for erection of a chapel and gate lodge at the Masonic Cemetery had been let to Richard Smith and Frank Reveil of Las Vegas. Tom Smith was the contractor for stone, brick and concrete work and plastering. Reveil was to do the carpentry work and Nisson and Sackman the painting and varnishing. The building was designed by E.W. Hart, local architect. The first story was to be white stone and second half story to be timber. there were to be four rooms, a kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms. The interior of the chapel was to be English oak and the windows of art glass. The building was to be equipped with six concrete receiving vaults. Known as the Charles Ilfeld Chapel, the building was used as a caretaker's home until about 1980. It burned in 1988. Transcribed by P. K.
