Son of Rufus of Alexander and Francis Pauline McCurry (Knight), Owen was born January 30, 1927 in San Antonio, Texas. Following the accidental death of Owen's father, he moved with his mother to Denton, Texas. His mother was remarried to Michael Zalesny and they moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico where his loving stepfather helped raise him. Enlisting in the U. S. Army in 1944, Owen served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. After the war he moved to Denver, Colorado where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betty" Louise Fleming. They were married January 20, 1950. Owen is survived by his wife of 57 years and four children: Michael (Sarah), Martin (Susan), Gail (Glenn Hunter) and Paul (Debbie) and seven grandchildren. Owen, a devoted father and husband, earned 'Father of the Year' awards twice in Eugene, Oregon where he both coached and umpired Little League Baseball during the years his three sons played. He often took his family on rock-hunting or hiking and camping trips to eastern Oregon and to the Oregon beaches and passed on a passion for exploration and adventure to his children. Owen was an accomplished pianist, delighting many with his superb classical renditions, playing for churches, benefits, neighbors and friends. A member of Mensa and a former spokesperson for the Cancer Society and United Way, Owen had a keen mind and diverse interests. Charming and personable, he entertained many with his lively jokes and stories. His hobbies included German stamp collecting, bridge, crossword puzzles, ping-pong and he shot a mean game of pool. He loved tennis, playing at Tennis World and Central Park Tennis Club in Kirkland, Washington. Owen showed amazing strength and courage during his twenty-year struggle with Parkinson's. He will be deeply missed by his family and friend's. At his request, no services will be held. Remembrances may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation. Published in print on 10/28/2007.
