San Marcial can be reached by taking I-25 south of Socorro, NM
about 25 miles, and exit at the San Marcial exit. Follow the dirt
road toward the river three miles. When it turns right (south) you
are in what is left of "New" San Marcial. The town was completely
destroyed by a folld on 13 August , 1929. The Masonic Cemetery is
located about a half mile down this road on the right (northwest)
side. The Catholic Cemetery is located about another mile down the
road also on the right side of the road.

The San Marcial Catholic Cemetery is very large cemetery with as
many as three hundred graves, most of which can be disguised by p
iles of rocks over the grave. Unfortunately, most of these graves
are unmarked and many of the tombstones are illegible. This cemetery
was surveyed in February 1998, by Robert Voss as part of his Boy
Scout Eagle Project. He was assigned by members of Troop 200,
Albuquerque, NM and members of the New Mexico Genealogical Society.

In addition to the catholic cemetery, there is another cemetery
located about a quarter of a mile west of the catholic cemetery
on top of a hill. It was nicknamed "Boot Hill Cemetery" by the
Scouts.  This graves in this cemetery are nearly laid out in rows;
unfortunately, most of these graves are also unmarked. On a
previous visit to this area, Charles Hunter of Socorro, NM mentioned
that this cemetery was a Civil War Cemetery. Whether this is true
or not has yet be determined. The fact that the graves are laid out
so neatly as compared to the usual random pattern of other early
New Mexico cemeteries may give some credibility to this statement.
Possible checking old newspapers may help shed some light on the
nature of this cemetery.
