Although the dates on these documents show dates in 1881 and 1882, it seems that these documents were actually filed in 1953. It's possible that these are themselves transcriptions of the actual documents. These documents were typewritten. The transcription below is by Robert J. C. Baca, October 16, 2001. [1st page] December 12th, 1881. The petition for the incorporation of the City of Socorro, signed by the inhabitants of the said place, was called in its order and after its reading this Body being thoroughly informed regarding the matter, orders direct and determines that: The said petition is approved and granted, and that (?) issue to the sheriff of the County that he take a census of the Plaza of Socorro within the following boundaries; On the North to a line on the North side of the house of Sesario Lopez, on the East to the Rio Grande, on the South at a bridge or point one thousand yards to the South of the Stamp Mill belonging to the (La) Joya and New Orleans Company, and to the West to the foot of the Socorro Mountain. And that the said sheriff may hire such assistants as may be necessary to take the said census, and shall make a detailed report of his work to this Body without fail at the next regular (term) of this Court in January 1882. January 23rd., A.D. 1882. The Board was called to order by the President, to receive the returns of the elections prepared by the Inspector and Judges of the Election for the Incorporation of the City of Socorro, held on the 16th day of the present month. The Clerk having read the aforesaid returns, the result (app...) follows: Total number of votes cast, Five hundred and ninety-two; Total number of votes cast in favor of incorporation being Five hundred and seventy, and the total number of votes against the incorporation being twenty- two. The following report was made by the Judges of election; [2nd page] We, the (undersigned) Judges and (Inspectors) of election held on the (current Month) of January, A.D. 1882, being the 16th day of that month, to determine whether the Plaza of Socorro in said Territory should be incorporated or not, by these presents testify that in the said election the number of Five hundred and ninety-two votes were cast, of which number Five hundred and seventy were cast for incorporation and twenty-two against incorporation, the majority for incorporation on being Five hundred and forty-eight. County of Socorro ) I hereby certify that the foregoing certificate of the Judges and Clerks of the elections held on the 16th day of January, A.D. 1882, to determine if the Plaza of Socorro should be incorporated as City was filed this 17th day of January A.D., 1882, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. And this Body or Commissioners taking the foregoing into consideration voted for the incorporation of the Plaza de Socorro and having examined the number of votes in favor of and against the said incorporation , we find a large majority in favor; and this Court in (concordance) with the votes given and also with the law of this Territory, declare and authorize the Plaza of Socorro that it shall be a legally incorporated City, and shall be known as the City of Socorro, within the limits set forth in the petition presented to us for the said (incorporation), and this Court further declare the Wards of the City to be those described and registered in the office of the Clerk and by the said Judges of election. All of which is hereby recognized and approved by the Court. This Court further ordains that an election shall be had on the 31st day of the current month of January in each and all of the Wards of the election of general and Ward officers in this City of Socorro.
