Kit Carson Memorial Cemetery
Taos, Taos County, New Mexico

Adjacent plaque reads:
Maria Ignacia Jaramillo Bent
Maria Bent was the sister of Kit Carson's wife, Josefa, and the wife of Charles 
Bent, the first Civil Governor of the Territory of New Mexico. During the Taos 
Rebellion of 1847, her husband was murdered in their home, but she and her 
daughters were able to escape by digging through an adobe wall to an adjoining 
building. 

Also buried in the Kit Carson Cemetery are all the grandchildren of Governor 
and Maria Bent: Lena, Albert, Odella, Amalia and Louis R. Scheurich, and 
Mercedes Scheurich Ellis.
