Died in Don Fernando de Taos, New Mexico Jan. 21, 1862
Aged 48 Years

Additional Comments:
Adjacent informational plaque reads:
"Peter Joseph de Tevis established a trading post in Taos in 1840, and later 
was involved in overcoming the insurrectionists of the Taos Rebellion of 1847. 
A close friend of Kit Carson, he served in Carson's behalf as an Indian agent 
on three of his appointments in 1854, 1857, and 1858."
