Smith H. Simpson 1832-1916 "Mother" Josefa V. Simpson 1842-1907 Additional Comments: Adjacent plaque reads: Captain Simpson had a distinguished military career in New Mexico, served in the State Legislature, and was a friend of Kit Carson. Simpson, along with other staunch Union supporters - Kit Carson, Ceran St. Vrain, and Tom Boggs - was instrumental in re-erecting the U.S. flag in the Taos Plaza after Confederates removed it during the Civil War. Since that day the U.S. flag has flown day and night in Taos Plaza to commemorate the event.
