HOWELL EARNEST.

  Hon. Howell Earnest, State Traveling Auditor and Bank Examiner (of Clayton, N.
M.). Born Phila., Pa., Oct. 4, 1873, son of John M. Earnest.
Educated there. Commenced in manufacture of hats with John B. Stetson there.
Carried on a store there for two years. Came to New Mexico, Feby 22, 1897;
settled at Clayton. Kept books for brother-in-law 2 years, then engaged in
insurance and realty business and originated abstract books. Business enlarged
until in 1910 was compelled to incorporate Howell Earnest Agency Co., which is
principal calling, although he has done much in various other directions. He was
one of the men who organized Clayton Commercial Club, of which he was secretary,
Was one of organizers of Union Co. Fair Assn., and has been its secretary ever
since. For six years he was Justice of the Peace, resigning to take present
office, to which he was appointed by Gov. McDonald, on Feb. 29, 1912. He is
interested in mercantile and other enterprises. Is married and has three
children. Is prominent in secret societies and holds high rank in the State
Grand Lodge of K. of P.
