      JACOBO CHAVEZ. Hon. Jacobo Chavez. Superintendent of Insurance of New
Mexico; son of Francisco Antonio Chavez of Valencia County, N. M. Was born there
July 15th, 1860. Was educated in the public schools of Los Lunas and in 1872
entered the St. Louis University. Was there three years, returned to New Mexico
and attended St. Michael's College, Santa Fe, for a year. Then became interested
in mercantile business at Los Lunas until in 1884 when he was elected County
Treasurer of Valencia County for 2 years. Entered into mercantile business for
himself at Los Lunas, remaining in that business from 1884 to 1893. In 1885 he
was appointed for the unexpired term of Probate Clerk and ex-officio Recorder
for one year. At the succeeding election was elected to fill that position for
the full term; he was re-elected at the next election, thus serving 5 years in
all. Then continued in office as deputy for the newly elected official another 2
years. In 1895 he was elected a member of Legislative Council for Valencia,
McKinley and Torrance Counties; was re-elected for same position in 1907, and at
the end of term was appointed by Gov. Hagerman Superintendent of Insurance for
New Mexico, which position he still occupies, having been re-appointed by Gov.
Curry and continued in office by Gov. Mills. The term of office was increased by
the Enabling Act until the advent of Statehood. He is married and has two
children both married.
