Delbert G. Redfearn 1918-2002 Delbert G. Redfearn, a resident of Mountainair, passed away on Monday, April 29. He was born in Kahler, N.M., to Don G. and Lula M. Redfearn on January 13, 1918. Delbert owned the Save Way Grocery Store and retired some 36 plus years later. He loved to run cattle and, for several years, he ran cattle in Mountainair and the Jemez Mountains. He was in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vera Redfearn; one son, Jack Redfearn; one brother, Ivall "Buddy" Redfearn; and two sisters, Evelyn Murillo and Donelda Miller. Delbert is survived by his daughter-in-law, Edith Redfearn and husband, Fred, of Belen; two grandchildren, Kerri Allgood and husband, Lance of Gallup, Ron Redfearn and wife, Colleen, of Farmington, and his two great- grandchildren, Dana and Jake Redfearn of Farmington; one brother, Don Redfearn and wife, Evelyn, of Belen; and one sister, Lanell Davenport of Belen. Wednesday, April 3, 2002 James David Riggall 1984-2002 James David Riggall II, 18, a resident of Belen, died on Thursday, March 28. James left behind a loving family, friends, and many loved ones. He was a senior at Belen High School, and, upon graduation, was already enlisted in the U.S. Army. His goal was to become a fighter pilot. James was the Commitment Platoon Commander of the Belen Junior ROTC, served as the Company Executive Officer and was the Armed Drill Team Captain. James was a varsity athlete, playing football for four years, baseball for two years, and was a wrestler for two years. He was also an honor student and a Staters Club member. He was just advised that his poetry had been ranked in the top five nationally and it was to be published later this year. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother and her husband, Jean and Bill Ray; and his maternal grandparents, John and Faye McCoy. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. She is survived by her son, Robert, and his wife, Diana, of Swampscott, Mass.; two daughters, Mary Beth Tanner and her husband, Terry, of Greenvile, S.C., and Christine Montgomery of Belen; her grandchildren, Siobhan, Parisa, Jonathan, Kathleen, Kimberly, Kellie and Teralyn; and six great-grandchildren, Brittney, Lauren, Allyson, Tanner, Caleb and Clayland. Born March 6, 1919, in Providence, R.I., Mrs. Montgomery met her future husband, the late Wilford "Monty" Montgomery, at the start of World War II as he set out to serve on a U.S. Navy destroyer in the South Pacific. After the war, Monty's Navy career took them to New Orleans and then to Waukegan, Ill. Mrs. Montgomery worked for many years as a secretary at the nearby Great Lakes Naval Station. In 1976, Addie and Monty retired to Belen, drawn by its mild climate and its beautiful mountains and desert. She was active in the Land of Lincoln Club and in TOPS. Addie's many friends will remember her delightful New England accent, her love of life and the joy she found in their friendship. She died peacefully at Ladera Nursing home, where she had been since breaking a hip more than a year ago. She will be missed by all who loved and knew her. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Berni, in 1989; his grandson, Antonio Berni in 1998; his mother, Margaret Seagrave in 1975; and his sister, Marie King in 1990. Farmer 1913-2002 Doris R. Farmer, 88, a resident of Socorro and formerly of Mountainair, died on Saturday, March 30. She was born Aug. 16, 1913, to Harry and Anna Kay (Kleiner) Edwards in Riley, Kans. She married James Albert Farmer in January, 1930, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 1969. She is survived by her daughters, Phillis Sutherland of Bosque Farms, Florence Sutherland and her husband, Allen, of Los Lunas, and Frances Smith and her husband, Ray, of Socorro; her brothers, Roy Edwards and Leo Edwards. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Gurule, 93, born in Scholle, N.M., the fourth child of Donaciano and Andrea (Garcia) Aragon, Lola grew up in Abo and worked at Papa Donaciano Aragon's general store. Her mother, Andrea, died after Lola's birth. On Feb. 26, 1934, Lola married Amado Gurule in Manzano and they settled in Adelino, where Amado ran the family farm. Lola had many interests -- among them were being a wonderful homemaker and cook. Lola's posole, green and red chile and biscochitos were among family and friend's favorites. Family would come just to enjoy her wonderful cooking. Lola enjoyed many hobbies -- among them collecting old ringing bells, thimbles, old buttons, salt and pepper shakers, and many others. Using her love of writing, Lola communicated with penpals around the world and had friends from coast to coast and in Canada. Known as "Nana" by her grandchildren, Lola's family was her pride, and she will be missed greatly by her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. Since 1997, Lola resided in Phoenix, Ariz., where she died after a long illness. Lola was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Amado B. Gurule, who died in 1984, and by her grandson, Steve in 1983. Also preceding her in death were her brothers and sisters, Nora, Sam, Andres, Carl, Patsy, Sophia and Fannie. She was born on Nov. 14, 1909, in Magdalena to Tiburcio Garcia and Tranquilina Marez. She was a member of the Catholic Church. Her family and her grandchildren were her life and she loved them dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guillermo Landavazo Sr.; her daughter, Sadie Olguin; and her son, Gene Landavazo. Lola is survived by her two sons, Alberto of Los Lunas and Ralph of Albuquerque. She is also survived by her many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren. Otero 1967-2002 David S. Otero, 35, a resident of Los Chavez, died on Friday, April 5. He was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. David actively coached a Little League team in the Albuquerque area and was an avid 49ers fan. He was a jack of all trades, accomplishing almost any goal that was set before him. Also, he was a single parent, and his two loving children where his pride and joy. He was preceded in death by his son, Martine in 1986. Wednesday, April 10, 2002 Floyd W. Romero 1953-2002 Floyd W. Romero, 48, a resident of Tomé, was suddenly called to the Lord on Sunday, April 7. He was a member of the Tomé Catholic Church and the Bosque Farms Rodeo Association. In 2000, Floyd retired from the Belen Public Schools with 25 years of dedicated service. He was a well-known area farmer for many years. He loved the farm and the rodeos. He was a very active supporter of high school and college rodeos. Floyd spent his last few hours with his special friend, Carol. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe B. Romero, in 1997. Floyd is survived by his two sons, Joseph and his wife, Perla, of Los Lunas, and Aaron of Portales; one grandson, Ignacio Romero of Los Lunas; his mother, Josie of Tomé; his special friend, Carolyn Caldwell of Belen; two sisters, Sara Casias and Ida Perea, both of Tomé. Gurule, 93, born in Scholle, N.M., the fourth child of Donaciano and Andrea (Garcia) Aragon, Lola grew up in Abo and worked at Papa Donaciano Aragon's general store. Her mother, Andrea, died after Lola's birth. On Feb. 26, 1934, Lola married Amado Gurule in Manzano and they settled in Adelino, where Amado ran the family farm. Lola had many interests - among them were being a wonderful homemaker and cook. Lola's posole, green and red chile and biscochitos were among family and friend's favorites. Family would come just to enjoy her wonderful cooking. Lola enjoyed many hobbies - among them collecting old ringing bells, thimbles, old buttons, salt and peppere shakers, and many others. Using her love of writing, Lola communicated with penpals around the world and had friends from coast to coast and in Canada. Known as "Nana" by her grandchildren, Lola's family was her pride, and she will be missed greatly by her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. Since 1997, Lola resided in Phoenix, Ariz., where she died after a long illness. Lola was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Amado B. Gurule, who died in 1984, and by her grandson, Steve in 1983. Also preceding her in death were her brothers and sisters, Nora, Sam, Andres, Carl, Patsy, Sophia and Fannie. Saturday, April 13, 2002 Emma K. Ankeny 1915-2002 Emma K. Ankeny, 86, who was born in Mostar, Yugoslavia, in 1915 and immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1939, died on Saturday, April 13. She had been a resident of Rio Communities since 1973 and was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. She was a well-known and beloved artist and teacher. Her work hangs in homes and galleries all over the country. Emma owned and operated Emma's Art Studio & Gift Shop in Rio Communities for many years. She was an art teacher and taught many fledgling artists throughout the country. Her art was not only restricted to the canvas, as she also designed costumes, acted in the theater, sang and played the guitar. She was a radio performer, singing many Croatian songs with her daughter, Vera, soon after arriving in the U.S. She owned and operated her own restaurant for many years. Emma's baking skills were well known as she baked many exotic cookies and pastries from her European repertoire. She loved to share her dishes of cookies, strudels, tortes, always giving them to her family and friends. In spite of being disabled and in a wheelchair for the past 16 years, she continued to do the things she loved and to share with the people she loved. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, William, in 2000, and her son, Arthur Ankeny. Gabaldon, 53, a resident of Albuquerque and formerly of Los Chavez, passed away on Thursday, April 18. He was a member of Holy Family Church in Albuquerque. Phillip retired from GTE Lenkurt as a maintenance technician after 22 years of dedicated service. After his retirement, he went to the Motor Cycle Mechanic Institute in Phoenix, Ariz., and graduated in 1994. After his graduation, he went to work at Nail Fast in Albuquerque as a pneumatic tools mechanic. Phillip was a top-notch Harley-Davidson mechanic and Harley owners always sought him out to work on their bikes or just to shoot the breeze about motorcycles. He was a longtime member of the Harley Owners Group. Next to his love for his family, he loved when his wife, Angie would go with him on long runs on their "Hog." All his family individually accompanied him out on the road on many occasions. Phillip's sense of humor and caring ways will be dearly missed by all. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank D. and Mary S. Gabaldon; and his brother and sister, Salomon and Rosie Gabaldon. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services. Saturday, April 20, 2002 Cyrus D. Hall 1921-2002 Cyrus D. Hall, CWO2 USN (Ret), passed away Wednesday April 17. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Luise L. Hall; his son, Jeffery S. Hall, GSEC (SW) USN; and his grandson Scotty. Cyrus was born June 21, 1921. He served his country faithfully, enlisting in the Navy in 1939, fighting communism in World War II and in the Korean War. He retired in 1960, having attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer after 21 years of faithful service. His duty stations in-cluded the Battleship USS Texas, the Mine-sweep YMS 183, the USS Manchester CL 83, the USS Algol AKA 54, the USS Essex CV9, the USS Fremont APA 44 and the USS Albermarle AV 5. He taught fire control school in Great Lakes, Ill., and completed his military career as a test engineer at White Sands Missile Range. He continued to serve his country as an employee of Sandia National Laboratories, working as a field engineer. He was quickly recognized for his level of knowledge and ability to get the job done right the first time. He became the "go-to" person to solve whatever problems occurred in the prototype weapons program. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and of the Fleet Reserve Association. A devoted husband, father and mentor for his family and friends, he always had a kind word to offer and was ready to offer assistance in whatever way was needed. His advice and guidance has proven invaluable. The world is a poorer place for his passing. His family would like to thank those who have rendered comfort and aid during this trying time. Saturday, April 20, 2002 Joseph Perea 1918-2002 Joseph Perea, 82, a resident of Los Lunas, passed away on Wednesday, April 17. He was a member of San Clemente Catholic Church. For many years, Joseph was an automobile mechanic in the Oakland, Calif., and Albuquerque areas. Joseph and his late wife, Annabelle, never had children of their own, but they were second parents to all of their nieces and nephews. All the children loved to go spend the nights with their aunt and uncle because the nights were spent playing games and having fun. Joseph built a duck pond for the children, and bought a special duck for their nephew, Michael. Even though no one gave the duck a chance to survive, it grew into adulthood and spent the summer months swimming and diving with little Michael in the pond. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 32 years, Annabelle. He was a member of the Catholic Church. John was a well-known actor and performer in the 1940s. He was a member of the Actors Guild and performed throughout the world. His last acting debut was with the National Greek Theatre in Athens, Greece. He wrote many plays that were performed in Athens. He lived and traveled throughout the world. John comes from a very prominent family in Monterey, Calif. They were a pioneer family and homesteaded large estates throughout the Monterey Valley. His grandfather, Dr. Roberts, was the mastermind behind the Big Sur Scenic Highway that runs down the coast of California. Many of the bridges, lakes and ponds are named after him. His grandfather and father donated land to many underprivileged people. John helped send many people to college, and one particular person he sent to college was Albert Martinez, who became his only family and later took care of John for over 30 years. Saturday, April 27, 2002 Frances Gail Dickson 1925-2002 Frances Gail Dickson went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 23. Frances was born in Eudora, Mo., on Sept. 8, 1925, to Roy and Fern Dodson. She resided in Houston, Texas, at the time of her death. She is survived by her father, Roy Dodson of Belen; her sister and brother-in-law, Altalee and Kenton Berry of Belen; and three loving children, John Dickson of Houston, Texas, Roy Dickson and his wife, Vicki, of Lincoln, Neb., and Suzanne Simmons and her husband, Larry, of Toronto, Ont., Canada; three grandchildren, Teresa Vardeman, Troy Dickson and Tami Couchoud; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren, Zachary, and Carson. Saturday, April 27, 2002 Hattie Katherine McNew 1911-2002 Hattie Katherine McNew, 90, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and longtime resident of Bosque Farms, died on Monday, April 22, in an Albuquerque hospital. Hattie was born Sept. 12, 1911, in House, N.M., to Henry Norris and Luella Oldham Norris. She was one of nine children raised in LaLande and Fort Sumner, N.M., where she attended school and worked with her parents in the production of the DeBaca Review newspaper. Although she held various jobs throughout her life, her dream was to become a nurse, which would have suited her well, for her life was spent caring for or offering support to friends, neighbors and family. Hattie had one son, Burl J. Coates; six step-children; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In June of 1956, Hattie married Robert J. McNew of Bosque Farms, where she resided until shortly before her death. She lived in an original adobe in Bosque Farms on McNew Road, named after her late husband, Bob. To her family, she was lovingly known as either Nanny or Sugar. Her grandchildren will remember her for her home-baked yeast rolls, walks in the fields picking asparagus, her beautiful yard and garden, picking flower bouquets to surprise their mother with, checker games, card games, her sewing, her ceramics, her dress-up closet, their aches being massaged with "old stinky," washing dishes with her after her delicious noon meals and visits to the farm. She was a member of Peralta Memorial Methodist Church. The family wishes to offer a special thanks to her dear friend, Janette Baughman, for her loving care. Saturday, April 27, 2002 Jacob Castillo 1932-2002 Jacob Castillo died peacefully at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital on Thursday, April 18. He was born on March 3, 1932, in Aragon, N.M. He is survived by his wife, Eloisa, of Albuquerque; his daughter, Gloria Traynham and husband, Jeff; his sons, Robert and Daniel Castillo; eight grandchildren, Sean and Jeff Holt, Danny, Alec and Matt Castillo, "little ladies," Michelle, Nicole and Kristen Traynham; two great-grandsons, Isiah and Sean Holt; two sisters, Ida Gallegos and Gertrude and husband, Keith; two brothers, Diego Castillo and wife, Sophia, and Dimas Castillo and wife, Francis; and many nieces and nephews. Wednesday, April 24, 2002 Delbert Brant Davis 1928-2002 Delbert Brant Davis, 73, a resident of Peralta, passed away on Saturday, April 20. He was born in Mena, Ark., but grew up in New Mexico. He was 15 years old when he started driving a logging truck. He was one of the first pioneers of the back roads, forging logging roads throughout Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from Ameron Pipe Products of Albuquerque with 33 years of outstanding service. He started his own trucking business, Falcon Lines, which he owned and operated until his second retirement. Brant and his wife, Loretta, own a small ranch in northern New Mexico where they loved having their family and friends come for hunting trips, camping, snow-sledding excursions, and piñon picking. With Brant and his family, branding cows was always a fun event. He was at peace when his wife and family were with him on his ranch, and he went there every opportunity he had. Brant's grandchildren were the light of his life. Being the master mechanic he was, he enjoyed and loved working on all of his children's vehicles. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Lee Davis, in 1955; and his father, Haskell W. Davis, in 1965. Jones Loague, 95, a resident of Belen, died peacefully on Saturday, April 20. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Belen. She was born on Jan. 7, 1907, in Williams County, Tenn., to Lon and Fannie (Petway) Arthur. Nellie moved to New Mexico in September, 1925, after her marriage to the late H.O. Jones, who preceded her in death in 1960. In 1962, Nellie married Clint Loague and moved to Clovis, where she resided until his death in 1981. She then returned to Belen in 1987 and resided here until her passing. Nellie was one of the best cooks that ever lived. Her passion was in canning, crocheting, cleaning and cooking, as she was a true homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her two brothers, Henchie and Hillard. He was a member of the San Francisco Xavier Catholic Mission in Jarales, Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Belen. Los Dos Voces Duo in which he played with Danny Sanchez at many Catholic functions. He also played the saxophone and sang with many other local choirs. He began his music career with his brothers, The Silva Orchestra, in his teen years and continued his musical career, even winning a New Mexico Hispanic Association Award for an instrumental performance with the band, Milagro. He also played and sang at the Senior Citizens Center in Los Lunas and loved to go to the Belen Care and Rehabilitation to entertain all the residents. He always carried his saxophone in the trunk of his car so he would be ready to play wherever he felt the desire. He retired from A.C.F. and later from General Electric in Albuquerque after approximately 40 years of dedicated service. He was inducted as a lifetime member of the I.A.M. Union Local No. 794 and even received a diamond pin for 50 years of dedicated membership. He was preceded in death by his father, Adolfo Silva; his mother, Severa P. Silva; his two brothers, Fidel and Miguel; his two sisters, Emma Garcia and Josefita Madero. Abran is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Dolores of the family home in Jarales; his two children, Ronnie and his wife, Catherine, of Los Lunas, and Evelyn Ortega and her husband, Jerry of Monte Vista, Colo.; five grandsons, Daniel and Chris Silva, David, Phillip, and Stefan Ortega; one great-granddaughter, Triana Silva; one sister, Ramona Jaramillo of Belen; and two brothers, Lalo and his wife, Rafelita, of Belen, and Raymond Tabet and his wife, Helen, of Barstow, Calif. Abran is also survived by his many loving brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. Romero Funeral Home, 609 N. Main St. Wednesday, April 24, 2002 Donald Horton Tennent 1923-2002 Donald Horton Tennent, loving husband of Helen Standard Tennent, died on April 22 at the age of 78. He is also survived by his four sons, Donald Tennent and wife, Nancy Kirkwood, William Tennent, James Tennent and wife, Pamela, and Edward Tennent; and four grandchildren, Jimmy, Jennifer, Drew and Hannah. He was born May 2, 1923, grew up in New York and joined the U.S. Air Force on Dec. 9, 1942. He served as a B24 pilot in the China-Burma Theater in World War II. He retired from the Air Force in 1962 and flew civilian aircraft in Hawaii. Later in his career, he worked for H & R Block and for the IRS in New Mexico, retiring from the IRS in 1993. He was a member of the Commemorative Air Force, 7th Bomber Group, Experimental Aircraft Association, American Legion, Elks and Quiet Birdmen. Services will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the First Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle NE in Albuquerque. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 29, at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Wednesday, April 24, 2002 Thomas Vosejpka 1922-2002 Thomas Vosejpka, 80, passed away on Saturday, April 20. He was formerly of North Riverside and served in the Army in the European Theater during World War II. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening and retired to Belen in 1985. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Vosejpka. He is survived by a son, Thomas A. Vosejpka and wife, Patti; a sister, Beverly Pople; a granddaughter, Trisha Prokup; a brother, Ervin Vosejpka; and other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. Behrend 1947-2002 Jerry L. Behrend, 54, loving husband, father, son and friend, and a life-long resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, Feb. 26. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Betty Behrend; sons, Jeffrey Behrend and James Behrend, of Los Lunas; mother, Mae Behrend; sister, Roberta Behrend, of Albuquerque; and several other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert F. Behrend in 1984. Behrend was an eight-year Vietnam Veteran of the U.S. Army. He loved to build hot rods and was an artist who created many things for family and friends. Sunday, March 3, 2002 George Henry Coffin 1926-2002 George Henry Coffin, a resident of Albuquerque since 1967, passed away on Monday, Feb. 25. He was born on July 10, 1926, in Framingham, Mass. George was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and proudly served in the U.S. Navy Reserve, achieving the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. He worked for over 50 years as a Tool and Die Maker, retiring from Motorola in 1994. For nearly 20 years, he selflessly volunteered for the New Mexico Mounted Patrol. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant and was a past commander of Troop 2 in Albuquerque. He was a master mason for 52 years, a member of the Temple Lodge Number 6 and was also an active member of Sandia Presbyterian Church. George is survived by his beautiful and loving wife, Valentina and his children; Herb and Karin Coffin of Ruidoso, NM; Jennifer and Tim March of Portales; Michel and Michael Mertens of Austin, Texas; and Cassandra and Larry August Jr. of Los Lunas. He is also survived by his grandchildren Heather and David Shields, Gary Coffin, Casey Board, Kari Board, Susan Coffin, and the newest addition to the family, his great-great-granddaughter, Avery Shields. George is also survived by his many friends who loved him and will miss his kind and generous spirit. Interment took place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Friday, March 1. Sunday, March 3, 2002 Merlin Crawford Gantz 1921-2002 Merlin Crawford Gantz, 81, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from complications of a fall and resulting brain injury. He was born on April 16, 1920, in Pikeville, Ky., to S.A. and Mary Gantz. His home through his college years was Indianapolis, Ind. Merlin attended Purdue University under athletic scholarship for baseball and football and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1947 and later his Masters at the University of New Mexico. His education at Purdue was interrupted by World War II, during which he was a Marine Corps pilot. He worked for New York Life Insurance Co. in the 1950s. At the old Albuquerque Sunport, he worked for the FAA in the control tower and later in Phoenix, Ariz., at Sky Harbour. From 1974 to 1996, he built himself a home and retired in Belen. In the early 1970s he moved from the North Valley of Albuquerque to Scottsdale, Ariz. Merlin and his wife, Jane, were very active in the Mountain View Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Merlin sang in the choir and participated in the musical productions put on by the church. Last year, Merlin joined the First Presbyterian Church in Belen. He was a member of the El Zaribah Shrine in Phoenix and recently became a member of the Bethlehem Lodge No. 56, AF and AM in Belen. His many interests included golf, flying, music and building model airplanes. Along with his wife, Jane, he was very active in the Rio Grande Horse Association. For many years he announced the State Fair horse show here in Albuquerque and at various national shows. He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Jane Bobbitt Maddox Gantz and daughter, Diane Lucille Hartman. He is survived by his children, Blake Maddox of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Jim Maddox of Belen; Susie Hartman of Scottsdale; his grandchildren, David Hartman and Bobbie Hartman Deamon of Albuquerque; Debbie Donk of Scottsdale; Glenn Monserrat of Phoenix; Amy Maddox Dawn of Arlington, Texas; Todd and Brian Maddox; his great grandchildren, Abby Mae Dawson; Jack Cooper Dawson; Colin Maddox; Sidney Donk; Taylor Daemon; Alexandra and Ryan Monserrat; and his faithful sweet dog, Wishbone, whom he loved dearly. His many friends will miss Merlin on the 16th tee box of Tierra Del Sol Country Club. Sunday, March 3, 2002 Eusebio Ortiz Pino 1925-2002 Eusebio Ortiz Pino, 76, a life-long resident of Belen, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 23. He was born July 12, 1925. He was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. He worked for V.C.M.C. in Barstow, Calif., from 1947 to 1950. He joined the U.S. Army in October 1950 and served during the Korean War in Alaska. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He retired from Kirtland Air Force Base after 33 years of dedicated service. He also worked as a building inspector for Valencia County from 1987 to 1992 and as a bartender for Tommy's Lounge from 1992 to 1994. He was preceded in death by his parents, Amadeo and Evarista Pino; three sisters, Vickie Munford, Sylvia Duran and Pasqualita Torres; and four brothers, Ross, Timoteo, David and Charlie Pino. Pino is survived by his wife of 48 years, Olivia; his children, Bobby and his wife, Barbara Pino; Cindy and her husband, Richard Sanchez, and Leroy and his wife, Marlene Pino, all of Belen; his eight grandchildren, Karrie, Jamie, Ricardo, Robert, David, Justin, Jeremy and Jacob; one great-grandchild, Nicolai Baca; and his sister, Patsy Archibique, of Barstow, Calif. Romero Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Sunday, March 3, 2002 Richard Smrt 1954-2002 Richard "Rick" Smrt, born on August 5, 1954, in Miami Fla., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 26. A life-long resident of Belen, Rick graduated from Belen High School in 1972. He was a well-known businessman owning and operating Rick Smrt Advertising for many years. His business adventures took him all over the United States. He was a mainstay at the New Mexico State Fair, selling his many wares. He was also one of the first entrepreneurs to realize the potential and magnitude that the Albuquerque Kodak Balloon Festival would have on the state of New Mexico and the country. Since the Balloon Festival inception, he made sure he had a well-positioned booth, and each year his business continued to grow. A person could always stop at his booths at the state fair, balloon festival, and many other trade shows and events and be greeted with a big smile and a warm handshake. Rick always loved visiting with all of his many family and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Richard "Little Richie Johnson" Smrt in 1997; one uncle, Charles J. in 1977; his mother and father-in-law, Eudora and Delno West. Sunday, March 3, 2002 Helen Eileen Waldie 1909-2002 Helen "Honey" Eileen Waldie, 93 years and 364 days young, a resident of Belen and formerly of Albuquerque, passed away in the presence of her beloved Lord, family and friends on Wednesday, Feb. 27. She spent her early childhood in Russell, Kan. One of her fondest memories was playing the piano for silent movies. Honey enjoyed her life, as her purpose in life was for her family and God. She was a short and classy woman. Honey's legacy to us is the recognition of joyful experiences in our lives and the guidance to handle the hard times. Her love of family, God and life will always be an inspiration to us all. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Los Chavez. Before moving to Belen, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Morrow, in 1947; her second husband, Arch C. Waldie, in 1992; her parents, Adam and Anna Mehler; and three brothers, Verlon, Gail, and Kenneth Mehler. She is survived by her children, John A. Morrow and his wife, Joan, of Tampa, Fla.; Marilyn Sue Farrell and her husband, Mike, of Belen; Janet Dunham of Lago Vista, Texas; Margie Collins of Twin Falls, Ind; Jim Waldie and his wife, Barbara, of Rimrock, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Viena Taylor, of Oklahoma City, Okla. She is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews.
