Wednesday, March 13, 2002 Mercedes "Mercy" Lenore (Gabaldon) Ethridge 1927-2002 On the morning of Thursday, March 7, Mercedes "Mercy" Lenore (Gabaldon) Ethridge's spirit was released and lifted to serve her Lord in Heaven after 74 years on earth. Those who are left behind to grieve her passing in-clude her two devoted children: Steven Ethridge and wife, Liana, and Michelle Tafoya and special son-in-law, John Rey; and her three precious grandchildren, Jonathan Ethridge, and Miles and Rebecca Tafoya. Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents, Lugarda and Juan Gabaldon; three brothers: Gillie, George and Bill Gabaldon, and two brothers-in-law; Joe Gallegos and Leon Prevot; her niece, Diane; and her nephews, Mario and Frank. Mercedes is also survived by her loving sisters, Annie Gallegos, Felice Prevot, Dolores (Dolly) Apodaca and husband, Henry, Corrine Sedillo and husband, Filo, and Loretta Buonauro and friend, Jerry Sanchez; and her wonderful brothers and their spouses, Milton Gabaldon and wife, Geraldine, and Eugene Gabaldon and wife, Gloria; also her sisters-in-law, Lala Gabaldon and Elizabeth Gabaldon; and her loving aunts, cousins, and nieces and nephews and a host of friends. She will be greatly missed but not forgotten for her many kindnesses and her unwavering love towards family and friends. Mrs Ethridge was a dedicated and contributing member of the Catholic Church. She worked as a nursing assistant and caretaker all her life, both at home and at St. Joseph's Hospital and the Los Lunas Hospital and Training School. "Her faith in God was strong; and she had absolutely no vices," her family wrote. "She was a woman of substance who lived up to her name, Mercy." The lesson her children and family and friends take away from Mercy's spirit and life is that a mother's love is unfailing and respectful, thankful to God and ever vigilant and responsible for the role as a parent that she plays in not only her children's but many other children's lives as well. The numerous children she tended to at the Los Lunas Training School were also blessed by her love; she was like a mother to all of them and doted on many of them. Mercedes was exceptional and her love was strong for many people, all of whom were touched by her. She understood the beauty and the godliness of a less-than-perfect body, of a small life with no connections or family, of a child or an adult with no hope for recovery or normality, of a suffering and tormented soul. She did all she could to make others comfortable, and she understood and lived her part in our fabric of life. All these things she did quietly and deliberately because she understood her role and she lived the truly good life. After her retirement from the Los Lunas Hospital and Training School, Mercy enjoyed visiting and travelling with friends. She was a participating member in the local senior citizen centers and enjoyed helping out and attending. She met many friends there as well and was ready to go on their outings and organized functions at a moment's notice, especially to Laughlin and Las Vegas, where she always had a great time. She delighted in describing how she won at bingo at the center and in those trips to Laughlin; how she won and where they ate. Mercy was always generous with her winnings and would be so excited to share her winnings with her children and grandchildren, always dreaming about what she would do with really big winnings. She had fun on these bus trips and invited and treated many family members to go along with her. She always wanted people to have a good time. One of her particular sayings throughout her life, when her kids and grandkids would go visit friends or go on a trip was "Have a good time, Honey." Mercy suffered from Alzheimer's disease and God saw that she was getting restless, and called her home gently. Mercy was only 15 when her mother passed away. During her illness, she expressed many times how she hoped to see her mother soon. Her words were "Dear Mom, I miss you very much, but maybe someday we'll be together." A singular thought, kept hopeful over her lifetime, that we are comforted to know that she has now, surely and finally, experienced in her most glorious moment at 3:07 a.m. last Thursday: Her reunion with her mother and father and other family members who have passed before her. Her passing into heaven was her most glorious moment and her children and family rejoice at all her choices in life and at having known and learned from her. Christian Mass was held for Mercy last Saturday, March 9, at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church; celebrant was Father David Gallegos. Her internment was at Our Lady of Belen Cemetary. Mercy was buried next to her parents and will surely be praying for us who are left to grieve her passing. Pallbearers were Kenny Gallegos, Roland Sanchez, Frank Buonauro, Leon Prevot, Miles Tafoya, and Diego Marlar. Thanks go out to Deacon Manuel Gallegos for leading her rosary and assisting the family. Mercy's family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who assisted in easing her final days: Dr William K. Summers; Susan and the other caring nurses and staff at Anna Kaseman Hospital; and all the love that can be expressed to Mary Kay, Lydia, Esther, Lissa, Virginia, Toni, and Astrid, and the other wonderful nurses and staff who gave special, compassionate care to Mercy and her family during her final stay at Sandia Hospice, Floor 10, St Joseph's Hospital, Albuquerque, NM. Finally, her children also want to thank Mercy's family and friends for each and every tender word and loving gesture extended toward them during Mercy's illness. Saturday, March 30, 2002 Earl Jack Traylor 1918-2002 Earl Jack Traylor was born on July 21, 1918, to Richard and Emma Traylor, who homesteaded in New Mexico shortly after it attained statehood. Raised into Alto- Ruidoso area, Earl worked in his late teens for the National Forest Service in training CCC workers to fight forest fires and maintain forest trails. After his marriage to Doris Graves in the late 1930s, he moved his young family to Deming where he worked for the Peru Mining Company supplying copper and lead for the war effort during World War II. Following the war, he accepted a position as electrical engineer with Public Service Company of New Mexico. When PSC's Deming plant was closed, he transferred to Albuquerque where he rose to the rank of senior operator, retiring in 1975 after 30 years of service. After retiring, Earl devoted his time to developing a small ranch in Bosque. He was able to return to his lifelong love for the land, nature and animal husbandry. Earl's ability with animals earned him the family designation of "Dr. Doolittle" because we all knew that he "talked to the animals and they talked to them." Earl dedicated his life to Jehovah God and symbolized that act by his baptism in 1968. After his retirement from secular work, it was his privilege to serve for 10 years as the presiding elder of the Belen Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. His knowledge of New Mexico real estate laws proved to be extremely useful to the congregation. He served for a number of years in the food service department for the conventions of Jehovah's Witnesses. Due to failing health, Earl and Doris moved to Odessa in 1995 to be closer to their children. Although his health prevented him from being very active, Earl enjoyed the fellowship of his Christian brothers and sisters in the Odessa Congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses. He found great pleasure in visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Earl has a deep abiding faith in the Bible's promise of a new world where all will enjoy abundant health with the prospect of everlasting life. He treasured the assurance of Christ that there will be a resurrection of all those in the memorial tombs.
