Date: January 12, 2002 Byline: Headline: Robert Karl "Bob" Shoup 1932-2002 Robert Karl "Bob" Shoup died on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital, Hospice Inpatient Unit in Albuquerque. Robert was born on Sunday, Sept. 4, 1932, to Lemon Shoup and Mary Kruskey Shoup in Brandenville, Penn., where he grew up. He served in the U.S. Air Force and in 1959 he married Carol Jean Miles. Shortly afterward, they moved to Carlsbad. They then moved back to Pennsylvania, where he bought and operated a salvage and industrial engine fabrication business until retiring at age 46. Since then, he and Carol have lived in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. For the last six years, they lived in Belen, where he attended the Belen Christian Church. He was baptized into Christ a week before his last Thanksgiving. His hobbies included camping, hunting and golf. His wife, Carol, preceded him in death on Sept. 12, 2001. Robert is survived by two brothers-in-law; Ray Miles and wife, Jeannette, of Carlsbad; and Roger Miles and wife, Esther, of Albuquerque; two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Stribling and husband, Elden, of Sulfur Springs, Texas, and Corliss Hall and husband, Dennis, of New Iberia, La. He lived a few years in Denver, Colo., finally making his home in Melbourne, Fla. Fred was an avid golfer and enjoyed crossword puzzles, but his true passion was dentistry. Clela was born on July 13, 1920, in Roswell. She was raised in Belen and graduated from Belen High School in 1938. She then attended Mid State Baptist Hospital Nurses Training in Nashville, Tenn., where she graduated as an registered nurse. She married Gordon Hale Crawford on March 13, 1942, and moved to Gallup where the couple resided until her retirement from nursing and his retirement from the Santa Fe Railroad. Clela worked as a registered nurse for 40 years in Gallup, initially for St. Mary's Hospital, as a floor supervisor; Dr. John Martin, as an office nurse and at Gallup Indian Medical Center as a pediatric nurse and surgical nurse before she retired. Clela was instrumental in starting the fire department in Navajo Dam, N.M., where she and Gordon moved after retirement. The Crawfords spent winters at Riverview Resort in Bullhead City, Ariz., and moved there permanently in 1997. Clela and Gordon organized non-denominational church services at Riverview Park, which has steadily grown since its inception. Clela was also a lifetime member of the American Nurses Association, New Mexico Nurses Association and the Tri-State Firefighters Association. Her son, Dale, and daughter-in-law, Gay Crawford, of Mohave Valley, Ariz., survive Clela. Her parents, Claude T. Trimm and Muriel Allen Trimm, her brother Leo T. Trimm and sister, Faye Belle Farrow, preceded her in death. Her daughter, Gayle Crawford Landers, preceded her in death on April 14, 2000. She'd moved from Belen in 1988. As a young woman, she'd moved with her family to Silverton, Texas, where she met her future husband and best friend for life, Amos Turner. They were married in a double wedding with Wilma's sister, Grace. The Turners were married for 63 years before his death in 1989. Amos and Wilma farmed and ranched in Silverton and Krum, Texas, before moving to McIntosh, N.M. Wilma was a postmistress at their general store, retiring after 30 years. The couple then moved to Belen. Wilma and Amos loved going to auctions, buying and selling antiques. They moved to Oklahome with their daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Charles Nicholson, in 1988. Mrs. Turner was a member of the Faith Baptist Church of Bokchito. She is survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Barbara Nicholson and husband, Charles, of Bokchito; grandchildren, Todd and Denna Nicholson of Woodlands, Texas, and Charlotte Jane and Tom Young of Midland, Texas; six great- grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Grace Shell of Ukiah, Calif.; brothers, Leon Pharr of Kingsland, Texas, and George Pharr of Lubbock, Texas; special friend and caregivers, Rae Ryker, Madera Reedy and family, Christine Payne. He was born Jan 8, 1916, in Duluth, Minn., and lived most of his life in Wisconsin. He grew up in Hartford and graduated from Hartford High School in 1933. After working for a few years, he attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, working toward an engineering degree. When World War II broke out, he served his country as an ROTC instructor, and in teaching navigation bombardiering. Following Victory in Europe Day, he served in North Africa and Germany with the Army of Occupation. He attained the rank of colonel in the Air Force Reserve and retired after 30 years of service in 1976. He was a staunch patriot and champion of his country to his last breath. In 1949, motivated by his passion for Dixieland jazz, he opened the Triangle Record Shop in Waukesha, Wis., where he reigned as proprietor of the only record store in the area until 1970 when he sold the store. During that time, Robert brought great joy to the community through jazz concerts he promoted featuring Dixieland bands from around the country, and a weekly jazz radio show he hosted on WAUK for several years. Following the sale of the record shop, Robert joined the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department. He worked as a dispatcher until he retired and moved to Belen in 1976. He and Sarah Noelke were married in September, 1983. Sarah was a loving and steadfast partner through Robert's last years and was devoted to caring for him after he suffered a debilitating stroke in 1988. Robert was a one-of-a-kind person who brought much happiness to many. He will be remembered for his joy of living, generosity, loving kindness and commitment to learning and teaching others. He never stopped looking forward to tomorrow and rarely complained, and continuously strove to become a better man. His wife, Jeanette, preceded him in death in 1982. He served as a student senator, working on better opportunities for the disabled. In 1986, as a New Vistas Independent Services Coordinator, he was central to the development of a handicapped transportation system for Belen, his hometown, which was to be a statewide model. He was a writer who used voice recognition software to put down his thoughts. "Rita was devoted to her family and a great source of strength and faith for all of us," her family wrote. "She never lost her sense of humor, continuing to joke with her doctor, Mitchell Binder, and her special nurse, Rose Reese, and staff at Lovelace Oncology Department until her last appointment." Date: December 22, 2001 Byline: Headline: Charlie M. Taylor 1927-2001 Charlie M. Taylor, 74, died at the Veteran's Hospital in Albuquerque on Tuesday, Dec. 18, after a long battle with cancer. Charlie was born in Herford, Texas, to John and Leona Smith Taylor on Aug. 10, 1927. Charlie and his family moved to the Hatch Valley in 1934, where they farmed. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served from 1952 to 1955 in the Korean Conflict. He belonged to Amer-ican Legion Post 14 and received an honorable discharge in March, 1955. He was a member of the Baptist Church in Salem, N.M., and was baptized at the age of 12. Charlie worked in the Halliburten oil fields and he also worked for Brown Construction for 16 years, Kent Knowline and Co-Con construction companies. He later went into business for himself with his sons as Taylor & Sons Welding & Mechanics. He retired because of health reasons. His favorite hobby was gardening and harvesting fresh vegetables. On July 3, 1957, he married Tweedie Dean Gage in Las Cruces. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; his oldest brother, Lifford, in 1986; his youngest brother, Glynn Taylor, on April 21, 2001; his parents-in-law, Ernest "Toad" Lathan and Allene Dean. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Tweedie of the family home; two daughters, Lorain Gage Flack and husband, J.L., of Belen, and Electra Gage Harvey and husband, Kent, of Socorro; two sons, Ernest Gage of Los Chavez and Charlie Taylor Jr. of Las Vegas; one granddaughter, Julie Flack Lopez and her husband, John, of Belen; and one grandson, Jerod Flack. She was a well-known area businesswoman, owning and operating Charlie's Paint and Body Shop and Wrecker Service since 1967. Betty and her husband, Charlie, started the family business. It is one of the few family businesses that is still in operation to this day. She was named in the Top 25 Business Women of New Mexico in 1999. She served on the Valencia County Fair Board for many years. She was a strong supporter of Valencia County athletics and was also a strong supporter of the Valencia County 4-H and FFA, donating time and money to all youth activities. Betty was called "Grandma" by both young and old and was loved for her vibrant and contagious personality. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie, in 1985; her mother, Mable Morton, in 1995; one brother, Jimmy Morton, in 2001; and one sister, Sue Morrow, in 1999. He was a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters for 55 years, retiring in 1976. Hotchkiss, 69, a longtime resident of the Belen, Los Lunas, and Meadow Lake area, died quietly on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, after a brief but valiant struggle with cancer. Born Marilyn Alda Hodges on May 6, 1932, to William Raymond and Ada Ruth (McKanna) Hodges in Berthoud, Colo, Marilyn grew up in the Berthoud, Loveland, and Long-mont, Colo., areas and met her future husband, Robert Hugh Hotchkiss, in 1949 at summer band camp in Gunnison, Colo. After anxiously awaiting his return from the Korean War, they were married April 2, 1952, in Longmont, Colo. Robert and Marilyn were blessed with four children: their oldest son, Eric Arden, who preceded her in death; William David of Albuquerque; Crystal Scott of Layton, Utah; and Robert Ross of Salt Lake City, Utah. After starting a family in Denver, then Pueblo, Colo., the Hotchkiss family traveled extensively. In 1967, she courageously packed up her home and children to join her husband on assignment in Bangkok, Thai-land, for an adventurous year. They relocated to Utah in 1968, then later to the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, where they adopted Evangeline Begay into their hearts and home, eventually moving to the Albu-querque and Belen area. Marilyn enjoyed shopping, cooking, canning, traveling and, most of all, nurturing her family. They have 16 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and two more on the way. She will be missed by her loved ones and many friends including members of the Los Lunas Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and workers in the Albuquerque Temple where she served with Robert, her husband of almost 50 years. She passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord Nov. 11, 2001, at her home in Belen. Veda was a resident of Belen for 60 years, and was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Belen where she played the piano for over 30 years and taught Children's Sunday School for 60 years. She worked for the Belen Chamber of Commerce "Welcome Wagon", where she thoroughly enjoyed welcoming new Belen residents, and for Davis Floral where she helped in many different ways. She was always working in her yard and loved to mow her lawn. Granny was a true servant of the Lord, continually striving to educate younger children, as well as adults, in their growing knowledge of the Bible, and the importance of serving the Lord and your church. She was a blessing to so many, and will always be fondly remembered. Veda died serving the Lord. She was preceded in death by her husband H.L. Marrow, her son Dwain Marrow, and is survived by her grandchildren Tim Marrow and wife Melody of Taylor Ranch, and Steve Marrow and wife Sheri of Ennis, Texas; great grandchildren T.J. Marrow, Allen Marrow, John David Marrow, Rachael Marrow, and Leah Marrow; daughter-in-law Lou Ann Morman and husband Joe of Longview, Texas; numerous nephews, nieces, church family and friends who loved her dearly. A visitation will be held at the First Baptist Church of Belen, Fourth and Becker St., from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001. A graveside funeral service will be held at Terrace Grove Cemetery, Mesa and Aragon Roads in Belen, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001. Date: November 14, 2001 Byline: Headline: Keith Roy Wilkins 2001 Keith Roy Wilkins was born on May 1, 1928, at Aberdeen, S.D., to Raymond R. and Bertha E. (Rawden) Wilkins. He was raised in the Cresbard and Scatterwood community and attended school in Cresbard. He then farmed with his father in the Scatterwood area. He married Aileen Marion Wells on Jan. 1, 1951, at Aberdeen, S.D. They purchased a farm on the banks of Preacher's Run, S.D., and farmed there with his family until 1985. The last 13 years of that time were spent in partnership with his son, Paul. In 1985, they moved to Denver, Colo., and worked as caretakers for two years. They then moved to Albuquerque, where they worked with their son, David, in his business and Keith also worked for the Rainbo Bakery until his retirement. Keith was a member of the Cresbard United Methodist Church and was a past member of Peralta United Methodist Church and the Scatterwood Methodist Church. He was an organizing member of the Faulk County Methodist Men; an active member of the Scatterwood and Cresbard Methodist Men and a member of the Peralta Methodist Men. Keith was initiated, passed and raised a Mason on April 18, 1998, in Phoenix. He was a New Mexico Mason and transferred his membership to the Faulkton Masonic Lodge this past summer. Keith was a lifelong member and past president of the Faulk County Farmer's Union. He enjoyed square dancing, music and traveling. He had visited nearly every state, Canada and Mexico. He took great pride in his family and was known as a quiet, earthy man. He is survived by his wife, Aileen Wilkins of Cresbard, S.D.; five sons, Roy Wilkins and wife, Lois, of Mansfield, S.D., Paul Wilkins of Cresbard, S.D., Craig Wilkins of Hereford, Ariz., David Wilkins and wife, Nancy, of Dallas, Ga., and Dale Wilkins and wife, Charlene, of Cordell, Okla.; three daughters, Gail Smith and husband, Jerry, of Denver, Diane Graham and husband, Tim, of Oceanside, Calif., and Rita Walter and husband, Dusty, of Denver; his mother, Bertha Wilkins of Redfield, S.D.; four sisters, Irene Roth and husband, Allen, of Mesa, Ariz., Enid Roth and husband, Robert, of Sturgis, S.D., Ardelle Bierman and husband, Ronald, of Chelsea, S.D., and Betty Arendsee and husband, Russell, of Arlington, S.D.; and 19 grandchildren. Montoya, 85, a resident of Valencia, peacefully died at his home, which he built in 1945, on Sunday, Nov. 18, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Oct. 3, 1916, to Evangelisto Montoya and Tomasita Chavez. On Nov. 27, 1937, he married Petrita Kline in Grants. In 1945, Romolo joined the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during World War II. Later in his life, Romolo retired from the Los Lunas Schools in 1979 after 20 years of outstanding service. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Petrita, in 1991; one son, Leo, in 1963; one daughter, Louisa, in 1993; and several brothers and sisters. Romolo is survived by his three daughters, Josie Chavez and her husband, Rocky, of Albuquerque, Cecilia Montoya and her husband, Joe, of Las Cruces and Adela Maestas and her husband, Gilbert, of Los Lunas; seven sons, Romolo Jr. of Los Lunas, Willie and his wife, Cathy, of San Bernardino, Calif., Patrick and his wife, Reta, of Meadow Lake, Matthew and his wife, Kathy, of Albuqeurque, Lawrence and his wife, Cindy, of Los Lunas, Ernest and Teri of Albuquerque, and Alfred and his wife, Linda, of Los Lunas; 33 grandchildren; 34 great- grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his three sisters, Manuela Lucero of Salt Lake City, Utah, Christine Roberts of Belen, and Melba Apodaca and her husband, Nate, of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Max Montoya and his wife, Mary, of Lemitar, and David Montoya and his wife, Alusia, of El Cerro; and many loving nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Peralta, with interment in the Valencia Cemetery. Date: November 17, 2001 Byline: Headline: Melvin Raymond Fuentes 1930-2001 Melvin Raymond Fuentes, 71, died on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at his home in Peralta. Ray is survived by his wife, Fannie; sons, Melvin Fuentes and his wife, Barbara, of Beaverton, Ore., Ronald Fuentes and wife, Delaine, of Roseburg, Ore., and Dale Fuentes and wife, Elizabeth, of Cheraw, S.C.; his sisters, Helen Peters, Velma Russell, Lillie Snyder, Shirley Snyder and twin sisters, Mary Owen and Myrtle Laney; and a brother, Eddie Fuentes. Ray was preceded in death by his brothers, Leonard and Joe; and both his parents. He was born June 23, 1930, to Raymond Urals Fuentes and Mary Ellen Heath. On Nov. 9, 1949, he married Fannie Howell in Frisco, N.M. In his early years and for the first year of their marriage, Ray worked in sawmills around Catron County. After that, he worked in road construction, building highways and bridges around New Mexico. After a few years and two sons, he went to work for El Paso Natural Gas in Kirtland, N.M., where he stayed for 13 years. While there, their third son was born. After many years, Ray pined to change both his career and where he lived. He packed up his family and moved to La Grande, Ore., where he started working in the wood products industry. He stayed there for a few years, then began working for other companies, finally ending up with Medford Corporation. While there, he went to Ireland as part of a team that, in conjunction with the Irish government, built a medium density fiberboard plant to utilize the maturing timber that had been planted to reforest the country after World War II. After he left Medford Corp., he moved back to New Mexico with Fannie. He worked at the now defunct fiberboard plant, then later for Ponderosa Products at their components plant. When the opportunity to oversee the dismantling and moving of the fiberboard plant he had worked at in Las Vegas, N.M., came, he jumped at the opportunity. He moved to Willa-coochee, Ga., for a few years to oversee the reassembly and start of the plant. His last project before retiring was the installation of a chip loader at the sawmill in Espaħola. After he retired, he continued to work at his home, building a shop and doing several improvements on the property. A memorial service was held on Friday, Nov. 16, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Los Lunas. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Luna Chapel, in Luna, N.M. Interment will follow at the Luna Cemetery. French Mortuary in Albuquerque was in charge of arrangements.
