Date: November 10, 2001 Byline: Headline: William "Ernest" Dishman 1924-2001 William Dishman, better known as Ernest, and a longtime resident of Corona, died Tues-day, Nov. 6, in an Albuquerque hospital at age 77 years, three months and 17 days. He was born on July 21, 1924, in Corona. His parents were Wilbur and Pallie Dishman, who were pioneer residents of Corona. He attended school in Corona and graduated from high school in 1942. He served his country in the United States Navy after which he was employed by Corona Trading Company for a number of years. He was a member of Corona Presbyterian Church. In 1995, he moved to the Belen Nursing Home, where he resided until the present time. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. Survivors are his sister, Zelfa Atkinson of Belen, who cared for his needs during the last years; and two nieces, Joanne Stewart of Claude, Texas, and Kay Lindsey of Claunch. Graveside services were held on Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Corona Cemetery in Corona. Officiating was Pastor Cal West. Date: November 10, 2001 Byline: Headline: Demetrio "Denny" Gallegos 1944-2001 Demetrio "Denny" Gallegos, 57, a resident of Los Chavez and formerly of Albuquerque, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Nov. 8. While a senior in high school, he co-authored, along with his father, Natividad, the Albuquer-que Manzano High School song, "Hail Manzano," which is still sung today. He was a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus in Albuquerque and Belen, a Eucharistic minister and a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, where he was actively involved in the Spanish choir, playing his guitar and singing. Anytime another choir needed someone to fill a vacancy, Denny was always a willing volunteer. Being the artist he was, he recorded several of his songs in Nashville, Tenn., some of which included "Tiny Bubbles," which was translated into Spanish, "Unfinished Love Song" and "A Pair of Millionaires," which he dedicated to his wife, Katy. Denny and Katy were padrinos of the San Juan Fiesta for Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Los Chavez and were active members of the Marriage Enrichment, Baptismal Team and the Cursillo Society. They were both very involved in singing for many weddings and funerals and were well known throughout the Valley for their musical talent. Denny was chosen by Sandia National Laboratory as a loan executive officer for the United Way, one of the many milestones that were great accomplishments for him. He never missed a party and was often the life of the party to boot. Denny was a people person and never met a stranger. He loved children and enjoyed the opportunity to care for or entertain them with his music and magic tricks. He was preceded in death by his son, Denny Marcel Gallegos, in1971; his father, Natividad Gallegos, in 1980; and his mother, Alice Gallegos, in 1994. Denny is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Katy of the family home in Los Chavez; his daughter, Natalie Williamson and her husband, Harbort; four grandchildren, Justina, Katie, Madison and Dallas, all of Auborn, Maine; two sisters, Barbara Gutierrez and Mary Sanchez and her husband, Daniel, both of Albuquerque; one brother-in-law, Gene Gabaldon and his wife, Mary Stella, of Las Vegas, Nev.; four sisters-in-law, Martha Giron, Adela Baldonado and her husband, Mike, and Dolores Gabaldon, all of Los Chavez, and Roberta Griego and her husband, Michael, of Los Lunas. He is also survived by his many loving nieces, nephews and special friends. With the utmost love for Denny's wishes, cremation has taken place. Date: November 21, 2001 Byline: Headline: Isabel Gonzales Baca Died 2001 Isabel Gonzales Baca, formerly of Belen and more recently of Albuquerque, passed on Sunday, Nov. 18, to be with her Lord and rejoin family and friends from her early life. She witnessed the 20th century changes in the Rio Grande Valley, in New Mexico and in the world. She was blessed to pass in the loving care of her children and left smiling with someone only she could see while the family prayed around her. She was preceded to God by her husband, Manuel B. Baca; a son-in-law, Gene Carrillo; and a grandson, Larry Baca. Born in Contreras in New Mexico Territory, to Hilario and Trinidad Gonzales, she helped raise her young siblings after age 10 after her mother's death, wed Manuel in 1936 and raised her own family, living most of her life in Belen. Isabel is survived by her daughter, Flora Carrillo of Albuquerque; son, Dennis G. Baca and wife, Ester of Las Vegas, Nev.; a son, Henry G. Sandoval, a lifelong resident of Los Lunas, was called to be with our Lord Thursday, Oct. 11, after a three-year illness. Ramon was preceded in death by his mother, Manuela Nellie Otero Lente; daughter, Julie Sandoval; father, Antonio Sandoval; and grandfathers, Elfego Sandoval and Ben Otero. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Denise Garcia; son, Bart Sandoval; and granddaughter, Kari Sandoval. Ramon was a high school All-American athlete in 1957 for completing in track and field. He held many event records in the shot put and discus. He continues to hold the Los Lunas High School record in the discus. He held the shot put record from 1957 to 1998. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1957 and obtained an honorable discharge after serving three years. Ramon worked for many years at the Los Lunas Hospital and Training School as a recreation director. In 1975, he earned a bachelor's of art degree in education from the University of Albuquerque. He taught at both the Los Lunas School System and Los Lunas Hospital and Training School. Ramon was the first former Los Lunas High School athlete to return to his alma mater to assume a head coach position. As a coach he guided many track and field athletes to the state track meet and coached several to become state champions and record holders. Ramon also coached Little League for several years and guided two teams to league championships. In 1972, he coached the Los Lunas Dophins to a perfect 12- 0 record. He loved sports and was a referee for high school football and baseball. He was a member of the "chain gang" for 20 years as a volunteer. Ramon also played softball with the champion Los Lunas Old Timers for 14 years. He believed in his community and was a former VFW Post commander with the Daniel Fernandez Post 9676. He spent many Thursday night running the VFW bingo and many Thanksgiving and Christmas days delivering food basket to the poor and needy. Ramon will best be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, husband, star athlete, teacher and a great friend. He was very fond of his family and friends. Coming to Belen to visit, he fell in love with the Land of Enchantment and moved here in 1982. He was a member of the Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus and the Zeus Club. He proudly served his country with the 351st Infantry 5th Army. He served in World War II as a light machine gunner and combat infantryman badge expert with rifle where he fought in Rome-Arno, North Appennines, and Po Valley campaigns. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal, along with the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars, one Service Stripe, and three Overseas Service Bars. He retired from Acklin Stamping in Toledo, Ohio, after 21 years of dedicated service. He then moved to Belen, where he worked for Horizon Corporation and was owner of the Village Ice Cream and Coffee Shop in Rio Communities. Donald was a member of the Toledo Gem and Rock Club, Roadrunner Depression Glass Club in Albuquerque, VFW, and DAV. He enjoyed his gardening and fruit trees but his most heart-felt interests were his children, grandchildren, and family. He leaves them the quiet knowledge, compassion, warmth, and love that far exceeds his five-foot-two-inch stature. Date: September 22, 2001 Byline: Headline: Barry J. West 1932-2001 Barry J. West, 69, died at his home in Los Chavez on Monday, Sept. 17, after a lengthy illness. He was born in his family's home north of Exira, Iowa, to Doris Freemen McClusky on July 3, 1932. He was then adopted and raised by Ernest and Olive West. He attended the rural school north of Exira and graduated from Exira High School in the Class of 1951. Barry then farmed on the family's farm until he joined the United States Air Force in January 1953. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Parks Air Force Base in California in 1953. He served four years in the air force, three and a half of which he was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, and received an honorable discharge in January 1957. He returned to live in Exira and worked as a mechanic for Minerman Ford Motor Co. until June 1964, at which time he moved to Los Lunas and was employed as a mechanic for Hadley Auto Transport for 14 years. He drove a Hadley Auto Transport truck until October 1988 at which time he had to retire due to medical reasons. On Aug. 21, 1953, he married Alberta Rattenborg at Kirtland AFB. To this union, six children were born. Barry was preceded in death by his parents, his mother; his son, Neal West; brother, Mike McClusky; his father and mother-in-law, Otto and Mildred Rattenborg, a brother-in-law, Robert Rattenborg; and one nephew, Richard Schaeuble. Date: September 19, 2001 Byline: Headline: Jack Alexander 1920-2001 Jack Alexander, a resident of Los Lunas since 1979, lost his long battle with cancer at his home on Thursday, Sept. 13, at the age of 81. Jack was born on Jan. 3, 1920, in rural Oklahoma. His teenage years were spent in Hazleton, Kan., where he graduated high school in 1938. Arriving in Albuquerque in 1939, he became a police officer with the Albuquerque Police Department in 1940. During World War II, he served as a military policeman at Kirtland Field, and returned to the APD in 1946. He graduated from the FBI Academy in 1952. In 1954, he joined Albuquerque Gravel Products as personnel and safety director. He remained with the company until he retired in 1982. An active participant in the community, Jack ran for the State Legislature in 1964. Jack had many friends and businesses associates, and was widely known in the concrete industry in New Mexico. His mother, Ruth Arnold of Enid, Okla.; his father, Homer, of Chico, Calif.; his sister, Lois Bauersachs of Victoria, Texas; and his brother, Bobby of Chickasha, Okla., preceded him in death. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Kay; his son, Bill and his wife, Jodee; his daughter, Jan of Vallecito, Colo.; and his sister, Wanda Stanley of Mount Ida, Ark. He is also survived by his grandchildren, April and Jacob Alexander, both of Albuquerque. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE in Albuquerque. Private interment will take place at 1 p.m. that day in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Date: September 19, 2001 Byline: Headline: Andres N. Carrasco 1931-2001 Andres N. Carrasco, born Nov. 30, 1931, joined the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 16, at the age of 69. He was a resident of Los Lunas and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Peralta. He was also a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He worked at the Los Lunas Hospital and Training School for 28 years, and was a school bus driver for the Los Lunas Schools for 10 years. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jennie Mendoza; his parents, Lugarda and Jose Ramon Carrasco; and one daughter, Madeline Moya. Andres "Sio" Carrasco is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Virginia of the family home; his five children, Ernie Gallegos and wife, Linit, Susan Carrasco and her husband, Libby, Patsy Sanchez and her husband, Joe T., Jesus Gonzales and his wife, Liz, and Francisco Gonzales and his wife, Carmen; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joe Carrasco, Anthony "Libby" and his wife, Susan Carrasco, and Salvador and his wife, Lucy Carrasco; three sisters, Stella and her husband, Erlindo Cordova, Linda and her husband, Joe Saavedra, and Rosemary and her husband, Vicente Blanco. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, with a rosary following at 6 p.m. at the Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church in Valencia. Lucero, born on July 6, 1920, in Seboyeta, peacefully joined his heavenly Father on Sunday, Sept. 16, with his family surrounding him. Arturo lived most of his adult life in the Los Lunas and TomT area. He served his country proudly with the U.S. Army during World War II. Arturo loved his family and his life and was an avid outdoorsman, loving to fish and hunt. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mela Lucero; and his parents, Benino and Lupita Lucero. He is survived by his daughter, Libby Jaramillo of Belen; his son, Lawrence Lucero and wife, Mary, of TomT; special grandchildren, Carol Brenda Peralta and husband, Fred, and Edward Lucero, both of Belen; six other grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Emilia Sandoval; and his special friends, Lupe and Anthony Ledesma of Los Lunas. Date: September 15, 2001 Byline: Headline: Kenneth "Ken - Kenny" Bruce Horton 1964- 2001 Kenny Horton went to be with the Lord on Sept. 12, after a lifetime battle with liver disease. He was born in Cortez, Colorado on Aug. 25, 1964, to Kenneth W. and Lena Bell Horton. The family moved to Los Lunas in 1966. Kenny attended the Los Lunas Schools and graduated from Los Lunas High School in 1983. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth W. Horton; his half-brother, Richard Davis; his sister-in-law, Martha Davis; and his step-father, Jim Taylor. He is survived by his mother, Lena Bell Taylor-Sonnenberg, and her husband, Wally, of Los Chavez; his brothers, Bill "Earl" Davis and his wife, Karen, of Sea Tac, Wash., Robbin Davis, Jim Davis and wife, Lynn, Shawn Horton and wife, Shelby; his sister Belinda Burkes and husband, Jimmy, all of Los Lunas; Roger and Duane Horton and their families of Farmington; his step-brothers, David Sonnenberg and wife, Nellie, Danny Sonnenberg and wife, Julie, all of Los Lunas, Dale Sonnenberg and wife, Patty, of Belen; and his step-sister Paulette Sonnenberg of Los Chavez; very special friends Michael Dawes and Connie of Bosque Farms; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
