Emma was an avid gardener, specializing in growing vegetables and canning her harvest. Having a creative talent, she also enjoyed her quilting and crocheting. Her faith was her No. 1 priority in her life, as she knew the importance of praying the rosary and encouraging others to do so as well. Emma loved having an opportunity to travel and would never turn down an offer to do so. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Antonio, in 1988; her three sons, Tony and Ray Sandoval and Boysito Garley; four brothers; and three sisters. Maria was born on December 14, 1925, in Perlhuette, Germany. She served as a nurse during World War II, working long and hard hours to support her family. In 1956, she married Roger Seamen while he was stationed with the U.S. Military in Germany. She was a very active and involved member in Die Deutchlander Club and VFW Auxiliary women's group, which brought her great joy and many dear friends. Maria also enjoyed bowling and the many friends she made with the Belen Bowling League. Maria will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roger S. She was the daughter of Nels and Christena Bladt. On June 5, 1930, she married Otto Rattenborg. They operated several different farms in the Audubon County area of Iowa. After Rattenborg died Feb. 1, 1978, she married Einer Nissen on Sept. 18, 1981. He preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1992. She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon and the Women's Circle. She enjoyed cooking and flower gardening. Mrs. Nissen was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Otto Rattenborg and Einer Nissen; a son, Robert Rattenborg; two grandsons, Neal West and Richard Schaeuble; and two sisters, Doris Christensen and Mamie Campbell. Forest was born Aug. 31, 1914, in Stonewall, Okla. He was a member of the Oddfellows and a 32nd degree Mason. He joined the Sheet Metal Union Local No. 49 in 1948 and went to work for the Zia Company of Los Alamos. He left there in 1968. He moved to Bosque Farms and worked for the Henderson Construction Company until 1973 when he retired. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Born in Baltimore, Md., to Costello and Marie Warner, she grew up in the suburbs of New York City. In 1940, she married Harold Battin, a widower with two daughters and they lived in Ridgewood, N.J. In the late 1940s, the Battins retired to Santa Fe. There, Dorothy was active in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Faith, where she was a member of the Altar Guild and the Daughters of the King. She was also a member of a Santa Fe garden club. Dorothy moved to Belen in 1994 to live with her son, B.W. Battin, and his wife, Sandy. She was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Lee Smith; and her two brothers, Gilbert and Russell Warner. She is survived by her son, B.W. She passed away quietly at home after many years of illness. She was born in Cromwell, Okla., on Sept. 3, 1927, and spent most of her youth in Oklahoma. She moved to Phoenix, Ariz., at the age of 18 with her parents, where she later married and had her children. She moved with her family in 1968 to Flagstaff, Ariz., and, in 1972, moved to Los Lunas where she lived until her death. Norma spent many years researching the genealogy of her family, enjoying crochet and crafts of all kinds, traveling by RV with her husband and in pursuit of the color purple. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles L. and Velma O. Willard, and her granddaughter, Denise L. Amuso. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Clyde Z. Her principal station as a Harvey Girl was the Alvarado Hotel in Albuquerque where she met Norman Kerr, a locomotive fireman and engineer with the Santa Fe line, whom she married in 1927. Elizabeth was a long time resident of Gal1up where she was active in many civic organizations. After retirement and a six-year sojourn to Lake Isabella, Calif., she settled in Los Lunas in 1977. Elizabeth moved to Los Alamos in February 2000 to be near her family. She was a member of Peralta United Methodist Church and First Congregational Church of Gallup. Reginald was an undergraduate from Northern Arizona University and a Ph.D. graduate from Berkeley, Calif. He was very active in the arts community, serving on the Arts Alliance Board in Albuquerque. He sang with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and was a past president of that organization. Reginald performed in Opera Southwest and Musical Theater Southwest. He also sang in several productions in the Washington, D.C., area. He is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Margaret Rodriguez; and three brothers, James, Edward and Ray. She was a secretary and assistant to Dr. Eggenhopher, Dr. Beaman and Dr. Bell and many other ophthalmologists in the Santa Fe area. She was a member of the Santa Fe Jaycees, Santa Fe Dog Obedience, Santa Fe Country Club and Tierra del Sol Country Club in Belen. She was an avid bowler, golfer, painter, organist and a very loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ray E. Hessinger, in 1995, and her parents, Hayden and Valora Lindsey. Betty is survived by her wonderful daughter, Rae Lynne Crowther of Salt Lake City, Utah, and her children, John Ray McDowell, Shawna VanDeValde and Amanda Crowther; and her two special sons, Kurt and his wife, Dolores, and their children, Joshua and Justin, and Kris and his wife, Elizabeth, and their boys, Daniel, Isaac and Gabriel, all of Valencia County; her sister-in-law, Hess Morrison of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; and her brother, Gerald Lindsey of Long Lake, N.Y. He was born in Kahler, N.M., a coal camp near Raton on March 27, 1914, of immigrant parents. He managed to graduate from college working odd jobs, and eventually received his master's degree. He was a beloved father and grandfather, teacher and principal. He had many friends in the Belen, Deming and Mountainair areas. Frank loved to play the violin for everyone and his greatest joy was making people happy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mozella L. Stromei; a son, Daniel H. Stromei; six brothers and two sisters. Buttram, 101, a resident of Belen for 20 years, died peacefully in Saturday, May 5. She was born Myrtle E. Baca on April 26, 1900, in Watrous, New Mexico territory and grew up in Dawson, N.M., where she met and married Robert E. Buttram. They lived many years in Maxwell, N.M., where she became a member of the Maxwell Baptist Church. They also lived in Springer and in Oklahoma and Arizona as well as 20 years in Elko, Nev. Stromei 1914-2001 Frank T. Stromei died on Thursday, May 3. He was from an Italian immigrant family that came to America seeking a better life. They settled in Raton, N.M. Mr. Stromei was the seventh of seven sons and daughters. He was the last surviving moment of his original family. His life was one of service to his community, his friends and family. He was 87 years old and had been a teacher, a principal and a superintendent and had lived all over New Mexico. He has had business interests that include real estate, insurance and politics. The family wishes to celebrate his life of many accomplishments. The only one of the children in his family to finish high school and obtain a master's degree from Eastern New Mexico University, he dedicated his life to the development and educational improvement of all young, as evidenced by over 50 years of service in public education as an administrator and teacher. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mozella Stromei, in 1993; and his son, Daniel H. Stromei, in 1999. He is survived by his sons, Frank C. Stromei of Corrales, Tom L. Date: May 02, 2001 Byline: Headline: Florence "Flo" Borrowdale 1915-2001 Florence "Flo" Borrowdale, a resident of Belen, died due to her failing health on Friday, April 27, at the age of 85. She was born on Aug. 11, 1915, in Chicago, Ill., and, in 1946, moved with her family to the Army Courts in Belen. Flo and her late husband, Hank, founded the Belen Bottling Company, "Hub City Pop," in 1961. Later, Flo began her banking career at the Belen National Bank and subsequently became vice president of Belen Savings and Loan, retiring after 35 years of service. Flo was an excellent cook and hostess to her many family members and friends. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed a challenging game against her husband and sons. She also enjoyed playing cards, swimming, golfing and dancing to Big Band music with her husband. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Henry Borrowdale; her parents; one brother; and three sisters. She is survived by her two sons, Larry and wife, Judy, and Jim and wife, Vicky, both of Albuquerque; one sister, Rita Mints and her husband, Charlie, of Chicago; four grandchildren, Kelly Bretches of Colorado, Steve Borrowdale, Linda Mitchell and her husband, Dale, and Chrissy Borrowdale, all of Albuquerque; five great-grandchildren; and her many loving nieces and nephews. Meyers, 35, a resident of Belen, died on Friday, April 27. Kelly was a 1984 graduate of Belen High School. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Caballo, N.M. His daughter, Taylor, was his main focus in life and he made sure they were together every opportunity, his family wrote. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen, in 1995. He is survived by his daughter, Taylor Marie Meyers; his father, Louie, and his wife, Eileen, of Belen; one brother, Hoyt J. Meyer and his wife, Karen, of Caballo; his sister, Shelly R. Nicholas and her husband, Alan, of Belen; his maternal grandmother, Winona Bell of Grants; and one nephew, Tanner Nicholas. Kelly is also survived by his loving uncles, aunts, cousins and all of his friends who loved him dearly. Funeral service was held Monday, April 30, at the Fence Lake Community Church in Fence Lake.
