Date: January 10, 2001 Byline: Headline: Mary Cleveland Wohlers 1912-2001 The life of a remarkable woman, Mary Cleveland Wohlers, ended on Sunday, Jan. 2, when she died peacefully in her sleep in the company of her family. She was formerly of Peralta. Born in her parents' home in Berkeley, Calif., on Dec. 28, 1912, she was a remarkable intellectual and physically dynamic force. She was a gifted musician to such a degree that her piano instructor presented her with a Steinway grand piano when she was 7. As a very early reader, she chose Plutarch's "Lives" and the works of Socrates for her childhood contemplation. She knew most of the Bible by heart and quoted it often. She loved poetry, theater and all forms of music. Mary began college at San Jose State University at the age of 16. She later transferred to the University of California at Berkeley. She was just as talented an athlete as a scholar. As a teen, she played at the Berkeley Tennis Club and was ranked as the third-seeded tennis player in California behind Helen Wills and Helen Jacobs, both of whom later won Wimbledon championship titles as well as U.S. championship tiles. In July, 1934, she married Claus Joseph Wohlers, a Montana rancher and miner who worked on the Gold Dredge Mosier, which was constructed, operated and partly owned by her father, Newton Cleaveland, in Pioneer, Mont. After 10 years on the ranch, she moved with her children to the small Montana town of Deer Lodge. There, she single-handedly transformed a very small two-room dwelling into a sizable two-story, three-bedroom house using only hand tools and a great deal of salvaged lumber. As a single parent and an accomplished pianist, she later used these skills to make her living teaching piano lessons in Deer Lodge, Mont., for a number of years. She worked at several jobs including as a newspaper reporter for the Silver State Post, as a cleaning woman and music teacher. In 1953, she and her two youngest children moved back to Berkeley, where she began working for a nursery to develop to her lifetime interest in plants, consistently focusing on the native plants of California. A member of the California Horticulture Society in San Francisco, she returned as a part-time student at UC-Berkeley to study music once again. She went into the plant nursery business which later included her own wholesale growing operation. She was one of the founders of the California Native Plant Society. The society was the first of its kind in the U.S. and over time, other societies have been founded to almost every other state and many nations. She was the society's first executive secretary, responsible for creating much of the original network of sponsors, educational programs, newsletters, fund- raising and day-to-day operations. Subsequently, she worked in the Department of Landscape Horticulture at the University of California-Davis and after her first retirement, taught all the original courses and was the major contributor to the design of the degree landscape horticultural curriculum at the College of Marin in California. In her second retirement, she relocated to Peralta, where she was the president of the first chapter of the New Mexico Native Plant Society. During this time, she also created a series of fanciful greeting cards and posters of birds and animals, the most fanciful of which was her "Bear Diddley," a dancing bear with a guitar, commissioned by her neighbor, Bo Diddley. She continued to be an avid experimenter and innovator in plant-growing techniques unique to the New Mexico climate where she evolved a sandy half-acre lot into a marvelous garden with a subterranean greenhouse. From a single shovel-size start, she created a generous buffalo-grass lawn, which became a rugged and cushioned soccer field and romping place for her grandchildren and then her great- grandchildren. She was the youngest daughter of Newton and Agnes Morley Cleaveland, author of the best-selling autobiographical book, "No Life for a Lady" and "Satan's Paradise," both dealing with pioneer life in early New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Morley Cleaveland of Datil and Loraine Lavender of Santa Fe; and her brother, Norman Cleaveland of Santa Fe. She is survived by her three children, Beth Tietjen and husband, Joe, of Bosque Farms, Norman Wohlers of Davis, Calif., and Mary Ann Montague of Dixon, Calif. Her grandchildren are Julie Ledbetter of Los Lunas, Gloria Caruana and husband, Greg, of La Mesa, Calif., Janet Anderson and husband, Mark, of Rio Rancho, Lee Tietjen and Joseph Tietjen, both of Los Lunas, Tara Tietjen of Mesa, Ariz., Lila Smiel and husband, Scott, of Los Lunas, Cady and Bruce Horobin- Wohlers of Davis, Calif.; and seven great-grandchildren, Aubree and Nicholas Caruana, Sebastian Tietjen, Britnee Maniscalco, Collin and Clayton Anderson and Tabitha Smiel. She was above all a wonderful, inventive, enabling and generous spirit and whose legacy will survive in as many forms as her prodigious and vivid imagination could conceive, her family wrote. She will be both missed and remembered. A family funeral will be held in Belen. Recollections of her life may be sent to her family at the following e-mail addresses: montague@inreach.com, jaledbetter@hotmail.com or wohlersn@aol.com or to Mary Ann Montague, P.O.
