Date: January 13, 2001 Byline: Headline: Sue Ellen Campbell Peralta 1951-2001 Sue Ellen Campbell Peralta, a lifelong resident of Belen, died at her home on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Being a single parent, Sue knew she needed to provide a better living for her and her family and decided to begin a new career as a student at UNM-VC back in 1980. She was interested in politics and education and started lobbying the state legislature for her peers. Later in her life, she continued her lobbying career at Main Campus in Albuquerque. Her belief in the rights of disabled students and in other student issues lead her to become a devoted lobbyist. After receiving her bachelor's degree in political science and communications. Sue began working for UNM in Albuquerque. Her son Steven said, "She loved politics and she cared deeply about education. She wanted to run for the UNM-Advisory Board because she had a connection with UNM-Valencia Campus and she wanted to make a difference. She wanted to give back to the community and she was always looking out for the children." She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church and a candidate for the University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus Advisory Board. Sue Ellen will be missed by her family, her friends, and her community that she served so well. She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Campbell in 1981. She is survived by her three loving children, Steven Campbell and his wife, Elizabeth of Belen: Kara and Matthew Peralta of the family home; her caring mother, Ruth Campbell; her sister, Ruth Ruiz of Gallup; her niece, Stacey Ruiz and her two children, David and Brandi. Date: December 16, 2000 Byline: Headline: Carlos Tabet Jr. 1909-2000 Carlos Tabet Jr., 91, a long time resident of Belen, died on Tuesday, Dec. 12. Carlos was born in Puntas de Agua on July 19,1909. Carlos' father, "Carlos Sr.," immigrated to America from Lebanon at the end of the 19th century. He traveled from New York to New Mexico and in 1901 he opened a mercantile store in Punta de Agua. In 1905 he met and married Onesima Garcia of Los Trujillos. In 1927, Carlos Sr. moved to Belen and opened Tabet and Sons Grocery Store on South Main Street. Carlos Sr. and Onesima had seven children: Frank, Carlos Jr., Joe, Pete, Bennie, Mary and Clara. Of the seven children, only two daughters remain. Carlos Jr. was a local businessman who owned and operated a number of businesses in the Belen area. The businesses included Tabet Hall, which he owned from 1936 until 1964. The hall is remembered by many local residents as the "hot spot" for dances on Friday and Saturday nights, and the place where many couples held their wedding receptions. Another business he owned and operated was Carlos' Lounge in Belen from 1936 until just four years prior to his death. Carlos' children have continued to operate the lounge once it became too difficult for Carlos to run the bar by himself. Another businss he owned and operated was Belen Beer and Wine Bottling Plant, which he ran together with his brother, Joe, prior to Prohibition. Carlos was a resident at Sunbridge Nursing Home for two and a half years prior to his death. The Tabet family wishes to express special thanks to the employees of Sunbridge for the excellent care that they provided for Carlos. Carlos is preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Lovato Tabet; his son, Carlos "Chico" Tabet; and four brothers: Frank, Joe, Pete and Bennie Tabet. He is survived by his three sons, Bonifacio, and his wife, Eloisa and their children: Yvette, Yvonne, John and Paul; Gilbert and his wife Wendy, and his children: Renee, Liz, Phillip, and James; Ronnie, and his wife Marybelle and his son, Christopher; his daughter Elvia Tabet and her children, Russell, Randy, and Angelica. Survivors include the three children of his deceased son, Chico; Charles, Kathleen, and Anna. Worley, 83, a resident of Belen, died on Wednesday, Dec. 27. While enlisted in the U.S. Navy, he served his country proudly in the South Pacific during World War II. Jesse was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. His granddaughter, Kathy Worley, preceded him in death in 1975. Martinez, 77, a resident of Los Lunas, died peacefully at his home in Los Lunas on Thursday, Dec. 21. George was an avid fisherman and loved being outdoors. He could also work a crossword puzzle like no one else. George was only four months old when his father, Max Martinez, died. His mother, Josephine Martinez, also preceded him in death in 1998, and a grandson, Pierre Rivera, in 1999. The Lord knew that and chose just the right time for him. On Dec. 20, Phillip left this world and moved on to a much brighter and fulfilling life. Phillip loved everyone and made friends easily. He had a big heart and would go out of his way to help others. "We will miss him dearly as he smiles down on us from heaven," his family said. Date: December 27, 2000 Byline: Headline: Harold H. Jackson 1924-2000 Harold H. Jackson, 76, a resident of Los Lunas, died Friday, Dec. 22. Mr. Jackson was the co-owner and operator of the Lenopy Market in El Cerro Mission. He was a highly decorated World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division. During his service, he received three bronze stars. Though very modest, he was not just a soldier, he was a hero. In the early 1950s, he was a professional boxer and was ranked No. 3 in the top 10 for featherweight champion of the world. He will also be remembered as a wonderful gardener who would share what he grew with all his friends and neighbors, and as an avid stock car racing fan. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Moriarty. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Stella Jackson; his son, Duane Jackson, in 1985, a son-in-law, Dennis "Dusty" Kimbell; and a brother, Emery E. Jackson. Mr. Sucharda was born on June 12, 1914, in Chicago, Ill.. He attended the University of Illinois, University of Chicago and the University of New Mexico; eventually earning two master's degrees in music with his principal instrument, the violin. He met Mary Ruth Waters at the University of Illinois and married her on Dec. 31, 1939, in Chicago, Ill. Rudy Sucharda was active in many areas of music education from grade school through high school such as band, choir, and particularly orchestra where his greatest talents were evident. This music career took him from Illinois to New Mexico, California and Wyoming. He was instrumental in developing the Youth Symphony in Albuquerque. Following his retirement in Laramie, Wyo., he spent hours teaching private lessons at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Sucharda and Anna Bosek Sucharda, and his wife, Mary Ruth Sucharda. Baber, Fire Chief of the TomT-Adelino Volunteer Fire Department and a Valencia Deputy Fire Marshal, died in an Albuquerque hospital over the Thanksgiving weekend. Terry was born to E.H. and Ruth Baber on March 9, 1954. Terry began his 20 years of fire service after graduating from Belen High School in 1973 when he joined the state's search and rescue team. After receiving his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of New Mexico, Terry worked as a caseworker for the Los Lunas Hospital and Training School where he became the fire chief of the facility. Terry joined the TomT- Adelino Fire Department as a volunteer in the early '80s and served as fire chief for more than 10 years. He became a deputy fire marshal four years ago and was the first K-9 accelerant detection dog handler in the state. Terry left his mark in Valencia and surrounding counties by showing his commitment and dedication to helping people in need and sharing his vast knowledge and experience with others. Terry is much loved and will be greatly missed by his two daughters, Amy Baber and Maggie Baber; three granddaughters, Amanda, Jackie and Brianna; brothers Wayne Baber and wife, Pnam, and David Baber; sister, Janice Johnston; and many nieces and nephews. Lorraine was the first Belen High School Future Farmers of America Sweetheart and later was crowned 1955 Valencia County Fair Queen. She was well known for her quilting skills and often gave her blankets away to other family members. She always loved to dance to her western music and was the friendliest person anyone would ever want to know, her family wrote. "We lost the most loving and devoted mom. People enjoyed when Mom was around because her laughter was always so contagious," her daughter Yolanda said. Lorraine was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert S. Chavez, in 1993; her parents, Juan P. Sanchez and Lucinda in 1964; her brother, Defido S. in 1957; and two sisters, Priscilla and Carlotta Romero in 1999. She was also a member of RSVP and worked as a volunteer at a nursing home in Casper, Wyo. for more than 11 years. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing Bingo, crocheting, reading, visiting, and loved her volunteer work with RSVP. While living in Los Lunas, he attended Daniel Fernandez Intermediate School and Los Lunas Middle School as well as participated in YAFL football. He was born and raised in Belen and currently a resident of California. Reina was a member of San Clemente Catholic Church in Los Lunas. She retired from the Los Lunas Hospital and Training School 12 years ago, where she worked as the canteen manager. Reina is preceded in death by her parents, Ramon and Teresa Luna, and her sister, Melecia Garcia. Reina is survived by her two sisters, Eva Cordova and her husband, Marcelino, and Virginia Carrasco and her husband, Andres; her three brothers, Richard and his wife, Mary Lou, Pat and his wife, Betty, and Fred and his wife, Consuelo; and her foster brother, David Luna. Date: October 28, 2000 Byline: Headline: Michael Raymond Crowe 1956-2000 Michael Raymond Crowe, formerly of Bosque Farms and a resident of Albuquerque since 1981, died after surgery at Alvarado Medical Center in San Diego, Calif. He was a board member of Crowe Pest Control of Bosque Farms for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and daughter, Jennifer, of Albuquerque; his mother, Edith R. Crowe of Bosque Farms; sister, Donnalee Crowe of Appleton, Wis.; sister Alice J. Crowe of Savannah, Ga.; numerous relatives in Virginia, his birth state, and Kentucky, where he was raised. His father, Raymond W. Crowe, preceded him in death in 1991. Michael attended the University of Louisville in Kentucky and UNM in Albuquerque; he taught in Albuquerque-area schools for 14 years, from where many of his students kept in touch with him. At the time of his demise, he was employed by America Online. He touched many lives with a primary goal to serve whomever and wherever he was needed. Date: October 18, 2000 Byline: Headline: Helen Biggane 1912-2000 Helen Biggane, a retired Foreign Service Officer, died October 4, 2000, in Albuquerque. Born in Ely, Nev. on June 7, 1912, she was the second of six children of John William and Mary Ellen (nee Daly) Biggane, both of whom were born in Cork, Ireland. Helen is survived by her sister, Dorothy Holmes of Socorro and husband Dr. Charles R. Holmes; brother John D. Biggane of Milly Valley, CA and wife Julianne Reed Biggane, and many nieces and nephews in the U.S. and British Isles. Helen attended the University of Wyoming at Laramie and then embarked on a secretarial career in San Francisco, Calif. During World War II she was employed by the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at the University of California-Berkeley. In July 1945, she was appointed to the Foreign Service Staff Corps. She served with the Staff Corps until December 1956, when she was appointed as a Foreign Service Officer. Miss Biggane served overseas as a clerk at Ankara and Athens, Economic Assistant and Vice Consul at Luanda, Angola; and various administrative and commercial officer/vice consul assignments in the Netherlands, Portugal and Brazil. She retired to Belen in August, 1968 as a Second Secretary - Consul at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Since February 1999, Helen resided at Manzano de Sol Retirement Village, in Albuquerque. After the death of her father from a heart attack in 1947, Helen was joined by her mother, who accompanied her on most of her subsequent assignments. Her mother died on March 14, 1981 and is buried in Terrace Grove Cemetery in Belen. Cremation has taken place and a graveside service for Helen was held at Terrace Grove in Belen on October 7, 2000 with Deacon Norbert Sanchez, presiding. Services were under the care of French Mortuary in Albuquerque. Helen was beloved by her many friends and relatives and will be missed by all who knew her. Date: October 21, 2000 Byline: Headline: Gabriel M. Baca 1913-2000 Gabriel M. Baca, a loving husband, father and grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Gabriel proudly served his country in World War II. He retired from Sandia National Labs in 1973. Gabriel was a lifetime resident of Los Lunas and a member of San Clemente Catholic Church since 1935. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9676. Gabriel spent much of his retirement years working on his farm in Los Lunas. He loved being with his family and had a great love for life. He was always first to lend a hand and quick to tell one of his stories. "In his 87 years, he touched so many lives and lived his life in such a way that we can all learn from his loving example," his family wrote. "The world is a better place because of him." Gabriel was preceded in death by his parents, Liberato and Vivianita Baca; three brothers, Felix, Ted and George Baca; and two sisters, Frances and Emilia Baca. He is survived by the love of his life for 54 years, Frances Baca; his two sons, Walter Baca and his wife, Theresa, and Gilbert Baca, all of Los Lunas; his grandchildren, Bryan and Sandy of Ruidoso, Claire and Paul Ciermans, Jason and Christy Baca and Claudine Baca, all of Los Lunas. He married Theo Marie Riley in 1951. Hal worked as an engineer for the Santa Fe Railway until his retirement in 1980. He is also a veteran, having served in the Army Air Force. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alma Godfrey in 1939 and Charlie Godfrey in 1986; and his sister, Juanita Haskins in 1969. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Theo Godfrey; his son, Reagan Godfrey and wife, Patricia, of Belen; his daughter, Ann Minner and husband, Loren, of Belen; five grandsons, Patrick Godfrey, Nathan Godfrey, Aaron Minner, Daniel Minner and Mason Minner; and one great-grandson, Weston Godfrey. In 1947, he served his country in Germany with the military police. While enlisted in the Army, Walter earned the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal.
