(Map courtesy of UNR Nevada in Maps online.) April 2, 2009 (Updated October 10, 2011) Researched & Compiled by Sue Silver Hawthorne, Nevada Introduction Until finding the above map on the University of Reno’s “Nevada in Maps” website, this researcher was not aware there was a Hebrew Cemetery in Carson City. The present Lone Mountain Cemetery map that is provided to the public does not mention the grounds at all, nor is it marked as such. Lone Mountain Cemetery is administered and supervised by the Carson City Department of Parks and Recreation. Research resources consulted for this work consisted primarily of all available online newspapers, information found posted on the Internet and A history, Jews in Nevada, by Professor John P. Marschall (University of Nevada Press, 2008). Three trips to Carson City were made to visit and photograph the grounds and tombstones and to research title information that was found sourced in Professor Marschall’s book. This document will discuss the history of the Carson City Hebrew Benevolent Society and its Trustees and their efforts to secure a cemetery for the Jews in Carson City, document the current “ownership”, size and condition of the Hebrew Cemetery and provide information about the persons buried in the cemetery. All research notes on the benevolent society are provided at the end of the document. Research notes on the people buried in the cemetery are grouped within the listing for each person. CARSON CITY HEBREW BENEVOLENT SOCIETY & CEMETERY (1862 - 1909) According to the Comstock Cemetery Foundation (CCF), Carson City and Virginia City each saw Hebrew Benevolent societies by 1862. In Virginia City, the CCF states hat society “purchased a cemetery on Cedar Hill.” The CCF makes no statement regarding the benevolent society in Carson City. The Jewish residents of Carson City, many of whom were early settlers in the town at the time of the gold and silver discoveries of the Comstock, acquired land for a cemetery in 1862 and made provision for the burial of their dead. On March 24, 1862, for $150 the “Carson Hebrew Benevolent Society,” represented by S. (Samuel) Price, purchased two acres of land that was described as being “situate in Park Place, Carson City, Nevada.” The land comprised ten town lots in that subdivision, each lot being 40 x 100 feet in size. (A map of the subdivision is mentioned in the deed but has not been found.) According to the 1860 federal census for Utah Territory, S. Price, a 20 year old native of Germany, was living in the household of J. Rosenstock, both men listing their occupation as that of Merchant. IRS Income Tax Assessment rolls list the firm of “J. Rosenstock & Price, Retail Dealers.” Price is identified in Jews in Nevada (Marschall, 2008, p. 21) as being Samuel Price, with the firm’s store being in the center of Carson’s business district “next to Fleishhacker’s.” On October 29, 1874, Joseph Rosenstock, Charles Harris and D. Pechner (probably David Pechner, later of Reno in 1880) purchased from Daniel G. Corbett a parcel of land on the north boundary of the Odd Fellows cemetery “near Carson City, Nev.” Corbett was a builder and contractor and had acquired some land to lay out what is called the “Corbett Addition.” An “Addition” is like today’s residential subdivisions. The deed from Corbett was made out to these men as “Trustees of the ‘Carson Benevolent Society’ and their Successors in Office” and the purchase price was $50. The parcel was described as being 180 x 200 feet in size. This is roughly .85 of an acre of land and is shown at that size on the 1948 Compiled Map of Carson City, seen on page 1 of this document. [Note: Joseph Rosenstock later moved to Elko, Nevada. Charles Harris moved to the Bay Area. David Pechner died in San Francisco the Sunday before May 25, 1886. He was a resident of Carson City in 1875. (Sources: Daily Nevada State Journal, 5/25/1886 and 2/23/1875.)] At the time of the 1874 deed, Rabbi Jacob Sheyer had attended to the religious services and needs of the Hebrews living in Carson City. Sheyer died in 1875 and was buried in the Hebrew Cemetery in Reno. His passing left the town without a religious leader. On July 23, 1876, the Carson Lodge, No. 266, Independent Order of B’nai B’rith was instituted and the Executive Council granted it a charter. On January 2, 1877, Chas. Harris, A. Bergman and Joseph Platt, the “Trustees of the Carson Benevolent Society,” transferred the above described property to L. Morris, J. Levy and J. Platt, Trustees of the Carson Lodge No. 266, I.O.B.B. and their Successors in office. This deed was recorded on March 16, 1877. [Note: Louis Morris and his wife Julia (nee Platt) Morris lived in the Jacob Sheyer household in Carson City at the time of the 1870 federal census. By 1920, Louis and Julia Morris were living in Los Angeles where they died in 1925 and 1928, respectively. Jacob Levy and his wife Frances (nee Lowenstein) Levy lived in Carson City in 1875 and 1880, their household also included Frances’ mother, Pauline Lowenstein. Jacob Levy died at Bodie, Mono County, California in 1901 and was buried in San Francisco. Joseph Platt is buried in the Hebrew Cemetery in Carson City.] Bishop’s Directory of Virginia City, Gold Hill, Silver City, Carson City and Reno (1878-1879 edition) listed “Independent Order of B’nai B’rith” at Carson City, and noted a membership of 21, including: President Jacob Kullman; Vice-President Charles Harris; Secretary Benjamin Harris; Treasurer Herman Olcovich; Monitor Jacob Tobriner; Assistant Monitor Joseph Platt; Lecturer Frank Boskovitz; Warden L. Morris; and Guardian A. Jacobs. [Note: Jacob Tobriner died about 1890 and his family moved to Oakland in 1891. He was the County Treasurer of Ormsby County at the time of his death. No place of burial has been located for Mr. Tobriner. (Source: Daily Nevada State Journal, 5/20/1891 and Daily Nevada State Journal 4/25/1940, “50 Years Ago”.)] The Reno Evening Gazette of January 28, 1882, published an article submitted by and titled, “The Reno Hebrew Benevolent Society.” It provided a brief background on that society and included: “…Some two or three years ago they purchased from Mr. Sanders two acres of ground to be used as a burying place for their dead. Before this in accordance with their religious teachings in case of the death of one of their family the body had to be taken to Carson or Virginia for burial.” In November of 1886, Grand President Zekind of the Grand Lodge of I.O.O.B. (San Francisco) announced that he would make official visits to several lodges, among them being the Carson Lodge. Although in Jews in Nevada (at p. 114-115), Professor Marschall writes that, “[T]he Carson lodge merged into the Washoe lodge” around 1895, newspaper accounts found mentioning the Carson Lodge after that year indicate that in some form or fashion the lodge may have still been functioning. In 1896, the District Grand Lodge in San Francisco held it’s 33rd annual session of which representatives from Carson Lodge No. 266 were named as being Benjamin Harris and Adolph Livingston. Likewise, at the District Lodge’s 35th annual session, Harris and Livingston again represented Carson Lodge No. 266. In February of 1900 only Benjamin Harris of the Carson Lodge No. 266 attended a meeting of the District Grand Lodge in San Francisco. He again attended representing the Carson Lodge No. 266 the following February, 1901. [Note: Although Harris was living in San Francisco in 1900, it appears that he retained a position on behalf of the Carson Lodge after leaving Carson City.] At the annual session in 1903, Benjamin Harris of the Carson Lodge No. 266 was re-elected Treasurer of the Grand Lodge. The San Jose Mercury News, in February of 1909, wrote of the “Annual Session of B’nai B’rith”, that was to convene at the Pythian Castel (sic?) in Oakland the next day. The district then included “all of the states on the Pacific Coast and extends as far East as Denver.” The meeting was to be attended by delegates from several western states including “Carson City, Reno and a number of other points.” [Note: This article is the last found during the present research that mentions a B’nai B’rith lodge at Carson City.] CARSON CITY HEBREW CEMETERY (1958 - Present) In 1958, the Carson Lodge No. 1, Free and Accepted Masons, commissioned a survey of the Masonic Cemetery at Carson City. Their survey map shows the southeast corner of the “Jewish Cemetery.” Map available at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/nv/carson/photos/tombstones/hebrew/map1.jpg From survey of Masonic Cemetery (Map Book 1, p. 38, 10/1/1958) The above map also shows the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) plot which was not shown on the 1875 map of Carson City (now located on the wall of the Carson County Recorder’s Office) or on the 1948 Compiled Map of Carson City, shown on page 1 of this document. That plot appears to be located within a portion of the Masonic Cemetery grounds as that cemetery was shown in 1875 and 1948. In December of 1960, several identically worded quitclaim deeds, involving 30.52 acres of land, passed to the Ormsby County Cemetery District. The district was formed in the late 1950s to address the need for funds to care for the cemeteries. Quitclaim deeds were given by the Ormsby County Treasurer, Capitol Lodge No. 4 I.O.O.F., Capitol Post No. 4 American Legion, Carson Lodge No. 1 F&AM, and Carson Aerie No. 1006 Fraternal Order of Eagles. (Official Records Book 89, p. 307-309, Book 89, p. 309-311, Book 89, p. 312-314, Book 89, p. 314-316 and Book 89, p. 316-318, respectively.) The metes and bounds listed in these deeds cannot be reconciled completely to the present lands shown as Lone Mountain Cemetery in the Assessor’s Parcel Map 002-101-01, within which the Hebrew Cemetery exists. A deed from one Virgil Ross to Carson City in June of 1977, found in Book 216 at p. 574-575 of Carson County Official records, contains a description of land that Ross quitclaimed to the City that includes the land on which the Hebrew Cemetery is located, though it is not mentioned as such. Measurements included in the Ross deed which cannot be reconciled to present maps, are shown on the 1964 map (see below) found in Map Book 1 at p. 244. The west line of the parcel the City acquired from Ross once bounded the east line of Moody Street, through which a portion of N. Roop Street now runs. [See section under Research Notes titled About Virgil Ross.] As an aside, in January of 1961 the Roman Catholic Bishop of Reno also issued a quitclaim deed to the Carson County Cemetery District, but for different land, presumably St. Theresa’s Catholic Cemetery which is located there. (Official Records Book 89, p. 380-382.) In December of 1964, a survey was made of the “Carson City Cemetery” that had formerly been known as the “Ormsby County Cemetery.” This map shows the Hebrew Cemetery in similar configuration as it had been shown on the 1875 and 1948 maps of Carson City, but without boundary line coordinates. Map available at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/nv/carson/photos/tombstones/hebrew/map2.jpb Map of Carson City Cemetery (Book 1, p. 244, 12/12/1964) The above map shows the Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) Cemetery (somewhat enlarged) and the Masonic Cemetery to the east of it, but without including reference to the GAR plot that was shown in the 1958 Masonic cemetery survey. The Hebrew Cemetery is shown in a similar size but, without stated boundary line footage, it is difficult to say if it was surveyed at the size specified in the earlier deeds. Another survey was done in 2003 that shows this area of Lone Mountain Cemetery, but the map does not show the individual cemetery sections. The survey was performed at the instruction of Carson City. (Map Document No. 2500, A-D, 8/12/2003, Carson County Recorder’s Office.) Map available at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/nv/carson/photos/tombstones/hebrew/map3.jpg Hebrew Cemetery within Parcel 002-101-01 (Carson County Assessor’s Parcel Map Book 2, p. 10) The road on the left that is shown winding northerly from Beverly Drive, is present N. Roop Street. Moody Street, that was the west boundary of the property deeded by Virgil Ross to Carson City in 1977, is a short distance to the left of N. Roop Street. The hand noted depiction of the location of the Hebrew Cemetery and size shown is only approximate. Map available at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/nv/carson/photos/tombstones/hebrew/map4.jpg Hebrew Cemetery “Section” of Lone Mountain Cemetery (Map provided by Tim Glancy, Cemetery Manager; n.d.) The above map was provided to the researcher by Lone Mountain Cemetery manager, Tim Glancy, and is not dated. The area shown in yellow highlight is the section that the cemetery authority identifies as the Hebrew Cemetery. The boundary dimensions for the area shown above are not known at this time. BURIALS IN THE HEBREW CEMETERY A handful of modern burials exist within the Hebrew Cemetery, some of whom may be Hebrew or Jewish burials and some who are not believed to be of the faith, such as William Works and Edwin Schroeder. There are several open areas that appear not to have been used and there are two concerns. The first is that there may be unmarked burials in those areas. The second is that there may be continued burial of non-Jewish persons as there have been since the 1990s. The city’s public grounds are filling up and they are presently attempting to acquire some additional land from the Masons. There are nineteen marked graves related to the historic years of the settlement of the Carson Valley. The earliest marked burial in the Hebrew Cemetery dates to February of 1873. The history of Carson City, however, suggests that there should be some earlier graves, although there were likely burials made in either Virginia City or Reno even given the long distance to those places. In California, it is known that Rachel Haines was taken for burial in a Hebrew Cemetery, from Diamond Springs in El Dorado County to Stockton in San Joaquin County in the early years. This research, to date, has not revealed any names additional to those on the list provided by the cemetery manager. This is most likely because the present research has been dependent upon online internet resources that while of assistance, does not provide full access to all available newspaper accounts or other historic documentation of deaths or burials that might be found to supplement the current list. No obituary has been found stating that burial occurred in the Hebrew or Jewish cemetery at Carson City, the lack of which when compared to burials in the Reno Hebrew cemetery, is made even more stark. The following graves have been identified: Historic Graves Modern Graves Ascheim, Mendel (d. 1883) Bloom, Grave Estep (d. 1994) Cavell, Joseph P. (d. 1928) Bloom, Norman E. (d. 1979) Cohn, Mamie (d. 1891) Cohen, Kenneth L. (d. 1990) Cohn, Abe (d. 1934) Cohen, Rose (d. 1994) Goldstein, Anne (d. 1900) Fisher, Rose L. (d. 1992) Harris, Frances (d. 1873) Schroeder, Edwin E. (d. 1944) Rice, Koppel (d. 1888-not on City’s list) Spiegel, Gertrude (d. 1901) Weiner, Benjamin (d. 1921) Note: From the research which follows, there is a concern that Samuel Rice, brother of Koppel Rice, and Samuel’s wife Fanny Mannheimer Rice, may also be buried in this cemetery. Fanny died previous to 1880 and Samuel died after 1910, though no obituaries or death notices were located for them. It would stand to reason, however, that since Samuel’s son, Henry Rice, is buried in the cemetery that his parents might also be. When last enumerated on the federal census in 1920, Samuel was 77 years old and living at Mound House, just east of Carson City. Morris Ascheim, one of the pioneer barbers of the cost, died the other day at Carson, and Dan De Quille of the Virginia Enterprise tells this of him: Ascheim was one of those who rushed to Meadow Lake at the time of the mining excitement at that place. He opened a shop under a tree, digging holes in the ground with a pick, in order to make his chair stand level. We had the first shave in the new shop, and once or twice during the operation Morris threw down his razor and took up his pick, in order to regulate a leg or two of the chair. He had his combs, brushes and other tools stuck up against the trunk of the tree, and was loud in his boast of having the biggest and best-lighted barber shop in the world. While we were being “polished off” about a dozen other customers, who had not seen a razor in from one to six weeks, dropped in from the hills and seated themselves in line upon a pine log to await their turns. The shop was a success from the start. Nevada State Journal, 5/1/1932: Carson City Collection of Indian Baskets Highly Valued; Star of All Weavers Held to Be Dot-So-Le See By Jessie G. Crissy, United Press Correspondent. Carson City, Nev. Apr. 30 – (UP) – One of the most exquisite exemplifications of art is native to Nevada and should be preserved in the opinion of Abe Cohn, Nevada pioneer and noted collector of Indian handicraft. Cohn’s collection of Indian baskets is known throughout the world. One basket alone is valued at $10,000. It was made by Dot-so-La-see, greatest of all basket weavers. She died in 1926, leaving behind handwork which probably will never be equaled. It is Cohn’s theory that basket weaving is a fine art. He believes his rare collections should be preserved and that the native Indian art of basket making should be stimulated. At present, it is in danger of dying. Born in Hangtown, Calif., 73 years ago, Cohn has been an Indian trader most of his life. His interest in Indian work was developed while a mere child. Other boys of Virginia City and Bodie, Nev., thought he was queer because he fooled around “with Injun junk.” When an infant Cohn came to Nevada with his parents and the Silver State, whose ore was a lure to the elder Cohn, has been his home since. Strong and husky, despite his age, Cohn is still an Indian Trader, although of late his activities as a collector has almost overwhelmed commercial pursuits among the Indians. Gradually Cohn’s interest centered on basketry. As a boy he knew Dot-so-la-see and encouraged her in basket making until she surpassed all other basket weavers. Her work is noted for its perfection of detail, choice of material, shaping and coloring. A real artist, she invented new ways of curing the fibre strands used and devised original patterns. In some cases the fibres were seasoned for 15 years. She worked to the last, dying when 95 years of age. Dot-so-la-see was possessed of a true artistic temperament, according to Cohn. She was good, knew and demanded the tribute due a great artist. “On one occasion,” Cohn related, “Dot-so-la-see, who weighted 300 pounds, came to me and demanded a corset. She always made her demands of me as I bought all her baskets. “There wasn’t a store in Carson City with a corset of sufficient girth so one was ordered by mail. “A few days after receiving her corset Dot-so-la-see came to my store in a rage. The corset was no good, she said. “I show you,” she explained, producing a fashion magazine picture of a slender girl. “ ‘Three days I wear the corset and didn’t get like that,’ she shouted, pointing at the picture.” And that, Cohn added, was the last time Dot-so-la-see ever referred to her generous waistline. Reno Evening Gazette, 1/29/1934: ‘Abe’ Cohn Dies at Carson; Discovered Dat-So-La-Lee and Made Her Basket Art Famous. Interest in Indian Craft Work Became Business of Well Known Resident of Capital City; Was Nevada Resident Many Years. Abraham Cohn, for more than fifty years a merchant in Carson, died Saturday night at his home in the capital city after a long period of failing health. Funeral services were held at the Knights of Pythias hall in Carson this afternoon, and the body was escorted to San Francisco for cremation. “Abe” Cohn was well known in Western Nevada, and was considered an authority on Indian craft work. He was the “discoverer” of Dat-So-La-Lee, famous Washoe Indian basket weaver, who died a few years ago. Cohn collected Indian baskets, some of them valuable and rare specimens, and his store, the Kit Carson Curio Store at Carson, was a museum of Indian work. He was born in California in 1859 and when he was six months old his parents took him to Bodie, where he spent his boyhood. For a time he was associated with his father in mining at Bodie, then in 1882 he moved to Carson where he opened a mercantile and clothing store. He began collecting the basketwork of the Washoe Indians around Carson, and soon his hobby overshadowed his business, so he turned to the curio business, and built up a large trade. He persuaded the old Indian women to make baskets for him, and also encouraged the teaching of weaving to the younger Indians. Dat-So-La-Lee was one of the oldest of the Washoe women, and he encouraged her to keep alive the dying art of basket weaving. For many years she made baskets for Mr. Cohn, and some of them are now valued at more than $1,000…. By Peggy Trego. [This article discusses the missing bullion that could not be accounted for during Hirsch Harris’ term as melter and refiner at the Carson Mint. Only a portion is transcribed below./ss] Hirsch Harris was honest. As he began to get acquainted with the mint workings, he noticed that certain things seemed a bit odd. Bullion was accepted at the mint, assayed, stamped and paid for. After processing, the amount of refined gold and silver placed in the vaults was supposed to tally with the assay of the crude bullion. Harris noticed that there were large gaps in value recorded between the receiving door of the mint and the vault. He mentioned this to Johnny Jones, who waved it off with the airy remark that the discrepancy would be recovered when slag from the processing was re-worked. $77,000 Missing By March of 1895, Hirsh Harris was really worried. The loss hadn’t been recovered in any re-processing. Harris communicated with Washington, and the Treasury dispatched Andrew Mason to look into things. What Mason discovered made Carson City gasp. There was something like $77,000 missing from the mint. HARRIS, M. The Republicans of Douglas county, in convention Monday at Genoa, made the following nominations: ….Treasurer, A. Livingston Daily Nevada State Journal, 6/24/1882: Mr. A. Livingston, County Treasurer of Douglas county, was in town last evening. Daily Nevada State Journal, 5/6/1883: A. Livingston, Esq., of Genoa, Douglas county, contemplates resigning the office of County Treasurer, for the purpose of going to Salt Lake City and entering into some kind of commercial business. Mr. Livingston is a live man and will be very much missed by the people of Douglas county in the event of his leaving. Daily Nevada State Journal, 5/17/1883: The Genoa Courier says: A. Livingston, our highly esteemed County Treasurer, has sold out his saloon business to John Simonis, and is now settling up his accounts preparatory to going to Salt Lake to engage in a more extensive business. He expects to be here a month or six weeks yet. His going away will leave a vacancy in the office of County Treasurer, to be filled by our worthy County Commissioners. By Mr. Livingston going away, also, Genoa loses one of its best, most live and energetic citizens. He has been elected to the office of County Treasurer for three consecutive terms, and has filled the position with credit to himself and those who elected him. He leaves a host of friends in this county as well as in other places. We together with others, wish him unbounded success in his new and more extensive business pursuits. Daily Nevada State Journal, 7/12/1883: Mr. A. Livingston and wife of Genoa, departed yesterday morning for Salt lake, their new home. In the person of Mr. Livingston, Douglas county has lost one of its very best and most energetic citizens. Daily Nevada State Journal, 12/16/1883: A. Reno Evening Gazette, 3/27/1885: A New Association. The Saloon Keepers of Nevada Asserting Themselves. The Nevada Liquor Dealer’s Association organized at Carson yesterday with A. Livingston of Carson President and the following as Vice Presidents:….. Daily Nevada State Journal, 9/11/1886: State Convention Delegates. (from Ormsby County) Carson Precinct-A. Livingston Daily Nevada State Journal, 9/19/1886: License Matters – The Carson Tribune says: The liquor dealers at Reno are on the qui vive concerning the Liquor Dealers’ Association organized last year. A. Livingston, of Carson, is President and Geo. G. Bryson, Secretary of the organization, but it seems as though the matter had been left in status quo, by those whose interest it is to protect themselves against the merchants who are permitted by the statute to sell by the bottle or up to five gallons without any other than their regular license, whilst the heavy license-paying saloon keepers lose all their bottle trade. It is now proposed by the saloon men of the State to stir up this, to them, very important matter and demand of all candidates for the Legislature their sentiments on the question, and any man from any county who will not promise to so modify the statutory law, making it compulsory for all store-keepers to pay the same State and county licenses as do the saloon keepers, certainly should not have a vote from any saloon keeper in the State of Nevada. Reno Evening Gazette, 6/4/1889: Hop Growing in Nevada. Says the Genoa Courier: Hops grow and thrive and yield abundantly in this valley. Proof of this assertion can be seen in nearly every door-yard in Genoa. A. Livingston and Jacob Kline, of Carson, have observed this fact and are going into the hop-raising business. They have purchased 80 acres of land, for this purpose from M. Cohn. The land is situated near the foot of Kingsbury grade, about three miles above Genoa. Hops are worth 15 cents per pound in San Francisco and an acre of land will produce 3,000 pounds - $450. Whew! These figures are startling, but they are not far wrong. Who knows but what hop raising will be the chief industry of Carson Valley within the next few years? Daily Nevada State Journal, 4/4/1889: The Tribune says the closing of the Carson saloons at 12 o’clock will be tested to-day. A. Livingston was to keep his place open last night and be arrested, so as to make a case. Reno Evening Gazette, 4/6/1889: An Agreed Case. Last evening’s Carson Tribune says: Yesterday Sheriff Ullrick arrested A. Livingston, proprietor of the Ozark Saloon, on a charge of violating the 12 o’clock closing law. The prisoner was taken to the city jail and just as the Sheriff was bout to lock him in cell 4, W.E.F. Deal, the attorney, walked in with a writ of habeas corpus and took Livingston before the Supreme Court, where a test case was made. Livingston was released on his own recognizance, and the argument began before the Supreme Court. Attorney General Alexander and District Attorney Torreyson for the State, and W.E.F. Deal for the liquor men. Daily Nevada State Journal, 5/17/1893: Governor Colcord has appointed A. Livingston as director of the Ormsby District Agricultural Association. Daily Nevada State Journal, 6/16/1893, MARRIED: LIVINGSTON-NOVITSKY – In Carson, June 14, 1893, Mr. Adolph Livingston and Miss May Novitsky, both of Carson. Daily Nevada State Journal, 7/21/1899: Reservoirs Sold Word comes from Gardnerville that the Alpine Land and Water Company had completed the sale of their reservoir sites to the farmers in and around Gardnerville. It is reported that the sale price was between $15,000 to $17,000. The principal owners are A. Livingston, Jewett Adams, William Westerfield, George Lamy, George Keith and William Musser and a number of other people in this section. It is a big thing for the farmers and they have shown good judgment in starting a movement for water storage without waiting for the action of the government. – Carson Appeal.
