GOODSPRINGS CEMETERY Goodsprings, Nevada Clark County This file was contributed to the Nevada Tombstone Registry by Brian McGee and is copyrite material. It is displayed here with Mr. McGee's permission for nonprofit purposes to assist those in searching for family members. Use of this information is expressly restricted and may not be displayed on any website or in electronic, printed or oral form without express written permission from the author. Contributed on May 29, 2001 by Brian McGee. From Las Vegas travel south on Interstate 15 approximately 30 miles to Jean, Nevada. From there turn right and go 7 miles to Goodsprings. The Cemetery will be on your right. A fence and a white iron gate surround the cemetery. Introduction This project was completed by members of Troop 78 of the Boy Scouts of America, and other volunteers. The project leader was Brian McGee, who was doing this project to complete his Eagle Scout rank. These numbers correlate with individual data sheets, which were prepared by the volunteers. In addition, there are 3 different lists of the people buried here. There is a numerical list, as the graves are numbered from west to east, an alphabetical list, and a list of the people who served in the military, if noted on the grave. Over 30 of the gravesites are unmarked, but they were numbered and included. The names of a few of the people buried in these unmarked sites might be found in the list compiled by Dick Taylor in the Goodsprings library. A copy of that listing is included in the back of this notebook. I'd like to include the brief history of Goodsprings by Dick Taylor: A BRIEF HISTORY OF GOODSPRINGS, NEVADA AS FOUND IN THE GOODSPRINGS LIBRARY Written by Dick Taylor "The village of Goodsprings, Nevada, has had a rebirth in modern history. At the time of this writing it is a vibrant town of hopeful citizens. Just 20 years ago it was virtually a ghost town and only a handful of hardy residents. It was circa 1861 that Joseph Good headed a party of prospectors into the area where Mormon settlers had tried previously to find lead but had hit silver ore instead. Good liked the area and staked his claims and laidout a town he called "Goodsprings". And the town was officially on the map. The railroad built a spur into the town from its main route between Las Vegas townsite and San Bernardino. The railroad brought a new class of residents including a tall young red-headed engineer and surveyor named J. T. McWilliams, who made his home in Goodsprings in 1894. McWilliams was later hired by Helen J. Stewart to survey her Las Vegas ranch boundaries in 1902, in preparation for the formation of a real town instead of a tent city as it was then." "Goodsprings was originally within the political boundaries of Lincoln County. For that reason much of the early records can only be found in the Lincoln County Court House in Pioche. By 1905, however, mining in the Pioche area had started its major decline and pressure to move the county seat southward began. On July 1st 1909 the split between Lincoln County and the southern communities became fact and Las Vegas became the new seat for the new political entity "Clark County". Part of the celebration included a baseball game between the Goodsprings team and a team of ball players formed to represent Las Vegas." I wish to thank Christine Stephens from the town of Goodsprings for her valuable help in the completion of this project. In addition, I wish to acknowledge the assistance of my friends in Troop 78, my grandmother Marjorie Butler, the other members of my family, and my friends from CCSN. Carrying out my project: I took 5 trips out to Goodsprings before my actual project was carried out. The purpose of those trips was to gather information from Christine Stephens, the library, and to survey the cemetery. We videotaped the entire cemetery twice to verify the accuracy of the data sheets recorded by the volunteers. The project day was April 30th. We met at 8:00 a.m. at Wasden Elementary School. There were a total of 7 drivers to transport 18 volunteers to the cemetery. Work at the cemetery began at about 9:30 a.m. Two groups of 2 people worked on the trash pickup with bags and rakes. The bags and rakes were donated by the Scoutmaster. The teams cleaned the cemetery along with part of the highway nearby. They also raked the pathway by the gate to make it smoother. The trash pickup groups filled 4 garbage bags. Everyone else was given numbered stakes and hammers, and they were instructed to hammer the stakes on the upper right corner of each gravesite. I had originally intended to remove the stakes when I was finished, but Christine Stephens said that it would be better to leave them in for easier identification. After the graves were numbered, I gave 6 teams each a clipboard with blank transcription forms and pencils and assigned each team a row to transcribe. Before they began, I explained how to fill out the forms to all the Scouts. There were 133 gravesites in all. Some of the sites were not marked, but a description was given on the sheets of what was there anyway. I spent most of my time answering questions and making sure everyone was completing the data sheets correctly. I brought 2 iceboxes with many drinks and doughnuts. I made sure that breaks were taken, but not for too long. The cleanup went smoothly and quicker than I thought, so I had one team clean along the highway. The transcription took longer than I thought, since some of the graves were not exactly easy to read or normal. When the cleanup crew was finished, I directed them to join some of the transcription groups to try to speed the transcription process. The outdoor portion took 3 1/2 hours, and ended at about 1:00 p.m. Once I returned home, 2 volunteers and I went through the sheets and alphabetized them, while checking for mistakes in the sheets. Over the next couple of weeks, with the assistance of my parents and other volunteers, I created a final map, typed up the information, and compiled the different lists. Then I compiled the information into 5 different notebooks: one was sent to the Tombstone Transcription Project website (Amber Cory??), to Christine Stephens, to the Goodsprings Library, to the Boulder Dam Area Council Scout Office, and I kept one for myself. Also, the information needed to be sent to the webmaster in ASCII text format. Mine was sent as a text-only file, since ASCII was not an option on my computer. This information and the interesting tidbits about certain people might be helpful to anyone doing genealogical research in the future. Sam MCCLANAHAN-had a ruptured appendix and was brought to a Las Vegas hospital to save his life. He tried to get a school started in Goodsprings and registered himself as the seventh student. Alice WOODWARD was a schoolteacher; her husband Herbert had damaged lungs and died quite early. Alfred ROBBINS is the father in law of Julia Robbins. Julia's Robbins' husband donated the land for the cemetery. Barbara LUTTNBERGER nee Stephens has Barbara's piano. MUNZEBROCK-was a German man, and in 1938 when Christine and her husband moved to Goodsprings he was the postmaster. The FAYLE family built the Goodsprings Hotel. The town of Jean was named after Jean FAYLE. She was also Mr. Ellis' mother. The person named "Mimi" on one of the markers was a sister to someone else buried there, and is believed to have the maiden name of FAYLE. LOFTIS-was shot and killed, and the man who shot him came to the funeral! His twin daughters were one year old when he was killed. Dale RICE-was six months old when he burned to death in a fire. There was a tall freezer against the door, and they couldn't move it to get to him. Herman WALKER-lost his life when he fell down a mineshaft over in Searchlight. KEELER-was a miner who never married. STUBBE-German, nice fellow, told Christine's parents he regretted never marrying. BOWMAN-had a wife who was the town's bus driver. Judy TAYLOR-was really young when she died; went to Mexico and had all her teeth extracted, was doped up by the people there and her husband found her dead. BREZEALE-died of cancer. NUTTMAN-years ago someone dug down into her grave because they thought she had been buried with money. She used to run the Goodsprings bar. FAUBION-was an old miner. DAVIES-he and his wife got inebriated and both lost their lives on the road down near Goodsprings. Dolly SMITH-died of kidney failure. Heber Burns-was the constable when Christine moved to Goodsprings. Bardwell-was in the Spanish American war. Norman Price-built the Goodsprings Schoolhouse and died in 1936. The Hitchcock person in the same gravesite was cremated in Florida and the ashes were brought back and buried in Goodsprings. Frank Williams-walked from Las Vegas to Carson City to prove that a road could be made up there, and after he did his hike they indeed built a road from LV to Carson City. Up to that time it was only a trail. He lived in Sandy Valley. Mr. Jarman died of cancer, and his wife died of old age. Ronald Eddie Hanson died in 1999, and Christine didn't know why a marker was still not on his gravesite. ****God Bless You Brian for the gift you gave Goodsprings, and the wonderful gift to all of us!
