He died as he lived, a smile illuminating his gaunt features. Death was caused by a serious attack of malarial fever, from which he had long been a sufferer. "Con," as he was known to his countless friends, arrived in Virginia City from Grass Valley in the summer of 1867. He at once secured a position in the mines, where he was a trusted and competent employee for many years. Later he was appointed a member of the paid fire department, where he remained until he took possession of the famous Crystal Palace Cafe about 20 years ago. He served as sergeant-at-arms of the state senate for several terms and later was elected presidential elector. He was his party's candidate for surveyor general against the present incumbent for the last two terms. The deceased was a great lover of home life and had entered the matrimonial state on three occasions, his present wife now being confined at Lane's hospital, San Francisco, with a serious illness and not expected to recover. He also leaves a son, James, a former resident of this city, now in business at Point Richmond, Cal. The funeral arrangements will be announced later. - Carson Appeal.
