BARTOGEE, a miner of the Eldorado Canyon district, was killed Saturday, January 3d, by the premature explosion of a blast in a tunnel on the Genghis Khan mining claim. In his testimony at the coroner's inquest, E. T. MERRILL tells the circumstances of the death as follows: "Tom stayed with us last night and we expected him up for lunch at noon. When he did not show up I went to the tunnel, calling to him and receiving no answer. I went into the tunnel and found him lying on the ground with his head covered with muck (rock). Thinking he was hurt in a cave-in but still alive, I took hold of him and turned him over, when I saw his head all caved in and did not see any sign of life. I left for camp immediately and called Dick HOGSED, who went back with me to the tunnel and found Tom dead. After that we notified the Nelson office who called the coroner. I went to the tunnel all of one hour after I heard him shoot his holes." The coroner's jury was composed of W. A. SCHAUSS, foreman; R. B. EMENS, J. E. BROWN, H. W. WEINEKE, R. HOGSED and M. T. MERRILL, with C. L. AUGMAHN ex-officio coroner. The verdict is as follows: "That the deceased was named Thomas J. BARTOGEE, aged 50, a native of Germany and a miner by occupation; came to his death by a premature explosion while doing assessment work on the Genghis Khan claim on the 3d day of January, 1914, about 12 o'clock noon. And we further find that his death was wholly accidental." Tom HARTOGEE was a lovable, kindly man, loyal to all his friends, and made friends of all with whom he came in contact. His death will leave a void in the hearts of many people in this section who have come to respect him for his good qualities and to love him for his kindly spirit. We record his death with a very sincere regret.
