HORDEN left Thursday evening for Gallup, N.M. in response to a telegram informing her that her sister, Mrs. James BREWIS, nee McQUADE is dangerously ill. This news is especially distressing coming so soon after Mrs. HORDEN's visit there in June to attend the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. BREWIS. Later: A wire received from Gallup brings the sad news that Mrs. BREWIS died Saturday morning at 6:00 o'clock. Mrs. HORDEN reached there at 2:00 in time to see her sister before the end. Mr. and Mrs. E. O. SHEPARD of this city, leave tonight for Gallup to be present at the funeral. LAS VEGAS AGE 7/15/1911 IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL SERVICE MARY McQUADE BREWIS LAID TO REST WITH FITTING HONORS AT GALLUP, N.M. The following account of the last illness and funeral of Mary McQUADE BREWIS, taken from the McKinley County Republican, of Gallup, New Mexico, will be of interest to many of our readers. "Saturday, July 1, 1911, Mrs. James T. BREWIS, died at her parents' home in this city after a two weeks' illness. She would have been 22 years of age on the 23d of this month. "Sadder news than the above was ever spread over a vicinity for a gloom was cast over the entire city Saturday when it was learned that Mary McQUADE BREWIS had died that morning at 6 o'clock, where she was so well known, esteemed and loved by all. Mary was endeared to every one in Gallup, where today all mourn her untimely death with deep sorrow. "When God saw fit to cut down this bright young life, when it could make so many relatives and friends happy is indeed a mystery. In her death, Gallup loses of its most popular young ladies, a mother and father a precious daughter, a loving husband a wife, and brothers and sisters and cousins a loving companion. This death means that a bright spot and everybody's friend has gone from our midst forever. She was an older sister among five grown up boys and was the idol of their hearts. "Death was caused by a complication of diseases. Rheumatism which, affected the heart caused a leaking heart which proved fatal." "The funeral, the largest ever held in Gallup, took place Wednesday morning from the Sacred Heart Church where the funeral rites of the Catholic Church were solemnized. At the conclusion of requiem high mass, the remains, attended by a vast cortage and Misses Susie MYERS, Amelia KRAKER, Henrietta WILMUNDER, Pearl BAILEY, Lillian MOODY, Lizzie CAVANAUGH, Messrs Mike DOUGHERTY, Wm. CAVANAUGH, John KITCHEN, Steve CANAVAN, Frank CANAVAN and James CAVANAUGH, acting as pall bearers proceeded to Hillside cemetery, where the remains were tenderly laid away. Many beautiful floral tributes by the members of the choir, of which Mrs. BREWIS had been a member since a small girl, and by the laides of the Alter society, the Elk Lodge and the Firemen of this city and the citizens, and flowers en masse from relatives and many others. The last resting place was lined with white and decorated with flowers. The funeral was impressive as also were the remarks of Rev. Florentine MYERS who told of the beauty of the young life, the same priest having on June 14th performed the marriage ceremony of Miss McQUADE and James BREWIS, and many times during the past week visited the death bed of the young bride and visited the home to give encouragement and sympathy to the relatives, his words from the alter were very touching. "Mary McQUADE BREWIS looked like an angel of God as she lay in state in her wedding dress, she being the bride only three weeks on the day on which she was buried. The choir sang some appropriate hymns for the occasion with the assistance of Mrs. J. H. YOUNG and Father VICTOR. "Though mother, and father in far off England have not yet learned that their dear child's kind and honest face is hid from view, may the generous and sterling deeds which she was always doing will long live and brighten their recollections. "Everything possible to save the young life was done by the city physicians, the husband and other relatives. On the day of the burial all the stores, banks, offices, etc. of the city were closed during the funeral ceremonies. This was not a reciprocation of Mrs. BREWIS' social or commercial standing, but was a recognition of her womanly virtues by those among who she has lived, since infancy. At the funeral service Wednesday morning were nineteen relatives of the deceased, a husband, two sisters, five brothers and cousins and aunts to mourn her loss. Mr. and Mrs. Bert SHEPARD and daughter, Marie, cousins of the deceased, arrived Tuesday from Las Vegas, Nevada, and Frank BREWIS, of Indiana, a brother of the husband came to attend the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. HORDEN, of Las Vegas, Nevada, were also there. Mrs. HORDEN is a sister of Mrs. BREWIS, and arrived the eve of her sister's death. "To the heartbroken husband who has lost his friend, sweetheart and bride and the grief stricken relatives the citizens of Gallup extend their heartfelt sympathy.
