SMITH shot and killed W. E.CARSON, aged 51, a contractor; fired and failed to hit Mrs. Jennie SMITH, aged 28, his divorced wife, and then shot himself. But before he killed himself SMITH retired to the rear of the yard of the Carson home and set fire to a stack of hay. As the fire began to burn briskly, SMITH placed the revolver to his temple and fired. He toppled, as he had planned, into the fire. Firemen and policemen dragged SMITH out of the flames, but the bullet had found its mark and he was dead. Mrs. SMITH was found by the officers holding the dead body of CARSON and sobbing. "I have killed the man who broke up my home," SMITH told Mrs. Kate WARREN, a neighbor, as he calmly handed her his suit case and asked that the diamonds and other valuables be divided among his five children. He then went back to the CARSON yard, distributed $356 and several diamonds among his young children, and before their startled gaze, killed himself. Mrs. SMITH denied that she was in love with CARSON. She said her husband left, she secured a divorce, and that she went to work for CARSON as a housekeeper. SMITH had been working at Las Vegas, Nevada, as a machinist. He arrived today from Chicago, where he had posted a letter to his divorced wife. The letter reached her yesterday. He told Henry MILLER today, on his arrival, that if he found his former wife with CARSON living in the same house he would kill both of them. - Los Angeles Times. Alexis SMITH was well known here in Vegas, having worked in the Salt Lake shops in this city for some time. It was well known among his fellow workers that he was a little "queer" in the head, and the news of his deed is not surprising to those who knew him best.
