THOMAS MAN PERISHED ALONE IN THE MOUNTAINS John L. CONNELLY, well known in Clark County, was found dead in the hills east of St. Thomas January 2. He had been working at the Grand Gulch mine, and on December 21, he left there with a four horse team intending to take a load of fence timbers to St. Thomas, and expecting to reach his destination the 23d. A week later his brother Charles left the mine for St. Thomas and when about six miles out found John's wagons and two horses where he had camped. After investigating, Charles decided that the other horses had run away and that his brother had followed them. It was very stormy and he decided that, in all probability he had overtaken them in the vicinity of St. Thomas and had gone on there. When Charles reached St. Thomas he found that his brother had not arrived. A search party was immediately started out and at ten o'clock Monday morning, Jan. 2, they found the body. Everything indicated that he had not been able to catch the horses, and that while chasing them he had fallen and struck his head on a rock. He evidently died without a struggle. He had been dead ten days when found, and his body had been badly mutilated by coyotes. The deceased leaves a wife and four small children. The body was buried at St. Thomas, Friday, January 6.
