The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net ************************************************************************ LAS VEGAS AGE 3/25/1916 SAYS HATHAWAY IS MURDERER CORONER'S INQUEST ON DEATH OF ALBERT CONRAD HAS FIXED RESPONSIBILITY Albert CONRAD, whose skull was pierced and brain penetrated by a sharp instrument wielded by Sam HATHAWAY, a gambler, in the Star Saloon on the morning of March 10th, died at five o'clock last Saturday afternoon. Coroner HARKINS impaneled a coroner's jury composed of J. M. ULLOM, foreman, W. F. RECTOR, C. E. PEMBROKE, L. H. ROCKWELL, A. L. DODDS and F. B. HURLBUT and an inquest was held the same evening. After making an examination of the remains, witnesses were examined as follows: Ed WASSERBACH testified that he was present tending the bar at the time an altercation between the deceased and Sam HATHAWAY occurred. He came from behind the bar and tried to push HATHAWAY from CONRAD. That HATHAWAY reached over him and struck CONRAD on the head with some weapon, the nature of which he does not know. That one MC KEE, Engineer SHUEY, PETERSON, the messenger boy, and Joe CONRAD, brother of deceased, were present at the time. SHUEY testified that he was at the saloon for some time that night, but did not know at what time, who was there nor what occurred, giving as the reason that he was drunk. PETERSON testified that he was in the dance hall when he heard somebody fall. That he went in and saw CONRAD on the floor but did not see the blow struck. That he went after the doctor and the officers. Joe CONRAD testified that he was in the game with his brother Albert CONRAD and Sam HATHAWAY when the dispute over the stakes arose and an altercation ensued between the deceased and HATHAWAY. All got up from the table and moved to near the stove. Somebody pulled witness back and swung him around. He saw HATHAWAY raise his hand with something shining in it, to strike Albert, but did not see the blow struck. Dr. R. W. MARTIN testifed that he was called and arrived on the scene about half an hour after the trouble. He examined the wound and suggested that the officers be notified as the results might be serious. That deceased died as the result of the wound in his head from which infection set in in the brain. The jury brought in a verdict that deceased came to his death on the 18th day of March at five o'clock p.m. from the direct cause of a wound inflicted upon him on the morning of the 10th day of March between the hours of twelve and one o'clock a.m. Said wound inflicted by an unknown instrument had and held in the hand of one Sam HATHAWAY in the Star saloon, in Las Vegas, Nevada. LAS VEGAS AGE 3/25/1916 DIED CONRAD: In this city, March 18, 1916, Albert CONRAD, aged thirty years. The funeral was held in the parlors of the Las Vegas Undertaking Co., Monday afternoon, Harley A. HARMON conducting short services and interment was made in the City cemetery. The deceased leaves two brothers in this city who have the deep sympathy of all in their bereavement.
