The affair occurred in the East Side Bar. The circumstances are related as follows: Two Mexicans indulged in a drunken brawl when "Babe" DENTON, the bartender, interfered, beating one of them over the head with a gun, inflicting severe injuries. A short time thereafter another Mexican went to the bar where DENTON was and asked him why he beat the other Mexican with the gun. He replied that one of the Mexicans fighting had a knife in his hand. The Mexican replied that it was none of DENTON's business if he did have a knife. At this moment, another Mexican, a shop man named CORONA, who had had no part in the trouble up to this time, approached. DENTON assuming, it appears, that CORONA was about to assault him, fired at CORONA, the bullet taking effect in the thigh, severing the main arteries and causing him to bleed to death. An inquest was had before Judge MAYNARD, justice of the peace, and a verdict returned exonerating DENTON. It is said that this verdict is by no means the conclusion of the matter, but that the grand jury to be convened this fall will probably investigate the killing carefully.
